“Nick, you notice everything and you never noticed that bell?” Witze stood up and crossed to the kitchen and the entrance.
“Yeah, but I thought it was decoration. No one rang it while I was here before.”
“I brought you and Todd here, but others are sent to a waiting point a few buildings down. If they’re compromised, we’ll know before giving away the location of the safe house.” He tugged twice on a cord hanging loosely beside the bell, then moved to the kitchen table where his handgun rested. After strapping on the hip holster, Witze checked the load of his gun, turned to Nick with a smile, tipped his head at the main door, and winked.
“C’mon, kid. I imagine you’re sick of sleeping alone, so let’s go bust your mate out of jail. You got a gun in those packs?”
Shaking his head, Nick was on his feet and moving toward the bedroom that had been his and Todd’s not so long ago.
