“Aw, I hate to hear that.” Marie shook her head and sighed. “I know Wes has, too, but he doesn’t wantto worry us. He avoids talking about it.”

“People you know?” Greg asked. “Otherwise, how would some random person even figure it out?

“No. The people at work are cool. Or if they have a personal issue with it, they know not to voice it there. It’s the ultra-conservative types. Sometimes they’ll hang outside places like Romeo’s to harass us going in or out. At least I haven’t had to deal with anyone trying to get physical.”

“Stay alert for that,” Greg said.

“Always,” I replied.

“That’s awful, though,” Marie said. “Those are supposed to be your safe places. Your havens. Where you can go and be yourself and have fun.”
