I was ready when I put my shoes on. We were about to start a new year. As always, there was a party on the last day of the year. Most times there were lot of fun stuff going on. Hopefully, this year would be fun too. Last year was terrible. One minute before, the tree on which wish cards were hung collapsed because of two people fighting, and the apocalypse broke out the place. They believed that if the wish tree fell, Santa's elves would not recieve them. I found it kinda childish. It was absurd to wait for 31st of December or birthdays, which is just one day in 365 days, to make wishes. If a person wants something, it is enough to want it from heart and make a little effort.
I walked out of my room and knocked my roommate's door. "Jenny, are you ready?" She heard I was looking for a roommate, and she directly brought her stuffs to my house. At first, we fought a lot. But now we get along very well. "I'm ready. Go to the car, I am coming." I left the house and headed to car. We were running late. The door opened simultaneously when the car warmed up. She wore a red dress and had a black faux fur over her shoulders. She was shining like a star with her brown curly hair, dark eye makeup, matching red lipstick and black stilettos. I, on the other hand, created a simple and elegant combination by combining normally unrelated pieces. I was wearing a black turtleneck sweather with thick fabric and a black tight pants, and long grayish coat over my shoulders. I parted my hair with red ends from the side and left towards my forhead.
When we arrived at the large venue where the party was held, I dropped the car key to the valet walked inside with Jenny. Everybody in the university was here starting from my classmates to the new students thsat came to campus this year. It was really crowded, and I was almost sure that some fight was going to break off. "Don't get worried if you can't find me when you leave. I'll be hanging out with Cindy and the others."
"Okay, dummy. Don't drink too much though." I sat down and positioned myself at a corner and started drinking coke while watching people. Since I wasn't a social butterfly, I didn't have many friends. Usually I talked with people who were friends with Jenny. Normally, the types who like me are social platonics. I fell for that cliché too. Since I talked with people who were friends with jenny, I talked to her too. Then I saw her walking through her group of friends. She was wearing a black overalls. The belt that she wore, revealed her slim waist and long legs. It was as if she wanted to emphasize her pure beauty by putting her blonde hair a high ponytail.
She was beautiful as always.
I didn't know too much about her. Her name, last name and which department she studying was enough for me. Or I thought that because I didn't like someone before. I was selective on my human relationships. That was the reason why I didn't have many friends. I really wanted Olivia to like me. But I thoght that was impossible because I would get too excited even when I passed by her. Just like anyone would be, I was left speechles every time I sighted her piece of art self. I glanced at the pen and paper on the table, and the wish tree. I couldn't help myself but stared at the girl sitting in front of me just like a work of art. I usually didn't believe in such things but I had a feeling that I didn't want to waste the oppurtunity this time. I should've done something good for myself.
"Jackson Swan, you are shining like stars today as well." Jessica sat in the chair and started talking with me. She had braided the few front strands of her long black hair and tied it behind of her. The high-heeled boots that she was wearing under her wihte dress, made her casual outfit approprite fot the night. "Thanks Jessica, you look nice too." I replied. She was a mutual friend of me and Olivia. "I wanted to come and say hello when I saw you watching my friend like she is the love of your life." I gave er a flustered smile. "Is it that obvious?" She laughed. "Bro, are you kidding me? If someone looked attentively at you more than five seconds it would be too obvious. Your glares caught my attention a few months ago when we were all in the same room. You liked her a lot, huh?" Jessica was an expert on human kind. She could figure out all of you at first sight. Herr observasions were never wrong. You ould never slip in a le when with her cause she would catch you doing it.
I smiled shyly. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you that wasn't true." She smiled. "Don't worry, it's a secret between us." You could trust Jessica. She left when her friends called for her. Then I noticed Emily making her way through me. We had a short-term realationship last year and then broke up. We just say "Hello" when we see each other in the campus. "Hi, Jackson. How are you?"
"Hi. Thank you, and you?" Meanwhile, one of the songs that I really loved started playing. "Wanna dance?"
"No, thanks. I don't want to get people's attention tonight." She didn't insist and left. I guess she fell for me during our short-term realationship. At first I didn't want to give her a chance because she was one of my close friends. But I said I wanted it to try because I'm a kind hearted(!) person. Then I understand that I couldn't be more than a friend with her and broke up with her. She got upset at first, but then she got used to it. Alfred started talking to me. It seems like I'm really popular tonight. He was drunk. It was obvious from the way he was walking so sluggilshy. "So handsome," I laughed, "What will you wish for this time?"
"I have a nice wish this time but I won't tell you what it is." He took one sip from his whiskey. "You never told me what you wished for anyways. Anyways, write down it's before it's too late." he pulled a purple ribbon from his back pocket, "Then tie it to the wish tree with this ribbon. If you want it so bad then tie it nicely." I took the ribbon from his hands. "Okay, thanks, bye." He left. I wrote my wish clearly. I want Olivia Benson to fall in love with me. I rolled the little piece of paper and tied the purple ribbon. While I was walking, I was very much aware of a pair of eyes watching me. I tied the purple ribbon that was sealing the paper onto the tree. Even if I didn't believe in such things, I wanted it to try. There was a minute to counting down. What happened when you counted down?..You might wonder. People hung their wishes on tree and gathered around the small stage. Then started counting down with a big enthusiasm.
"10, 9, 8, 7, 6.." I started praying. Lord, I'll do my best for you to accept my wish. That's the only thing I want from you this time. Please don't ignore it. "5, 4, 3, 2, 1!" Everyone started cheeing and clapping their hands with joy. Jenny and her group were hugging each other. After that, Jenny walked through me to wish me a happy new year. I hugged her. "We spent another year together, I guess." She laughed. "I'm discussing moving in togetther with Tom. If he agrees with me, I'll move to his place." That was kinda sad. She walked through to her friends. I hugged Alfred and Harold. "So bro, what did you wish for this time?"
"I wished something that I've been wanting for months." Then I looked at her. We made eye contact for a split second. She smiled at me and waved her hand. I wavedd back with a little shock as my heart started beating as if I just ran a marathon. It hadn't even been three minutes since I hung m wish up but I guess it was a fast delivery to Santa's elves.
As it approached one in the morning, Jenny walked through me. "Take me out with your white horse." I laughed and held her when she was about fall down. "I don't know about the horse. I have a white car." I helped her walk with slow yet steady steps."A car will do for now but it has to be a horse next time." I helped her inside the car and fastened her seatbelt. While I was walking throught the driver's seat, I made a little eye contact with Olivia. She smiled and winked at me. I smiled shyly and closed the door. After fastening my own my seatbelt as well, drunk Jenny and I had a nice road to home with her silly songs about me.
