"They're in the atrium at school, doing their homework," Marley replied, thanking Gabby for the cup of water, but was confused when her best friend left one beside Aiden's birdhouse – that he clearly wasn't planning to paint – before retrieving another for herself.
She shot her best friend a look, who began to mouth something Marley couldn't make out as she opened her paints. Marley could almost make out a number or two, before her bed creaked, and Aiden sat down on the tablecloth beside her, picking up the paints. "There's four colours in here."
She wet her brush and dabbed it in a paper towel. "White is a shade, but you can mix the primaries and make more colours on the empty side of the tray."
"What if I want black."
