Chapter Ten: The Impossible Task and a Plan

"Mother fucker…" Kenjiro heard Danno mutter as Danno crouched at the top of the hill looking down into what Kenjiro assumed was the Goblin nest.

The rest, including Kenjiro, weren't allowed to go up the hill with Danno in fear of someone being too loud and getting spotted.

At the top of the cliff Kenjiro saw Danno clench his fist and shake his head. These actions made everyone at the bottom worried that they might be too late, and Kenjiro had a growing feeling of guilt and self hatred if that turned out to be true.

He had just killed people even if he didn't mean to, he shook his head, he was even making up excuses for himself so he didn't feel the blame. He was such a coward.

Danno eventually came back down and didn't look at any of them as he just looked to the ground, with his hands shaking from him clenching them together with that much force.

"What did you see, Danno?" Sadasue asked.

Danno shook his head. "Let's go home, get some proper adventurers to save them." He said, not answering Sadasue's question before beginning to walk away.

Kenjiro looked at Danno shocked, as did everyone else. What did he see?

But Kenjiro wasn't thinking that. He grabbed Danno by the scruff of his collar and although the man was a bit taller than him he pushed him into a tree behind him. "Are you stupid?! You said it yourself, by the time the adventurers get here it'll be too late! We have to go save them now!" Kenjiro said, his voice loud but not loud enough to alert the nest of Goblins over the hill.

The rest of the men with them didn't do anything as they also wanted to know the answer to that. But if Danno was going home because of something then they would follow him. As Danno was a former adventurer, if he couldn't handle it, how could some regular farmers handle it?

Danno muttered something but Kenjiro heard it so he shook Danno roughly to get him to speak louder. "I said it's impossible to save 'em." He said harshly. "You think this is easy for me, I know better than anyone 'ere what Goblins do to people, and I've seen what people come out of a situation like this are like. But I'm telling you it's impossible."

"Why is it impossible?! We can beat them, it's only a bunch of Goblins! We have gear, swords and what do they have?! Clubs! This would be a simple fight!" Kenjiro said to Danno, still pushing him into the tree as he glared at Danno, who still was looking at him.

"It's not just Goblins." Danno said, before he abruptly pushed Kenjiro off of him. Sending Kenjiro to the ground as he wasn't ready for it. "They have a Goblin Lord! Don't you understand!? A Lord! It's impossible for a bunch of untrained farmers, a retired adventurer and a disabled kid to fight against it!" Danno shouted, getting louder and harsher that he was almost shouting.

Kenjiro was hurt by his comment, an obvious dig at his face that he was still coming to terms with even if he didn't try and think about it.

"It's a D-Rank monster." Danno said, calming down and addressing all of them as two men helped Kenjiro back to his feet. "It might not seem that high in the grand scheme of things but compared to us that's impossible to fight. And with the amount of Goblins there as well, there's no way we can fight against all of it."

Kenjiro shook his head in disbelief. Why did this have to happen? He only wanted to get stronger but now he's being told that because of him a Goblin Lord has decided to take the children of the village.

"I'm not giving up." Kenjiro said with determination in his voice. Everyone turned to look at him confused. "I'll go down into that nest by myself if I have to, I'll break as many bones as the battle demands, kill the Goblin Lord and save the kids by myself, while you run away like a coward. I don't want to abandon them and betray the trust the kids and parents have in me." Kenjiro said in his speech, his voice getting worse as he spoke, that it was mostly rough sounding. His speech was mostly to motivate himself as he wanted to run away as well, but he wouldn't, not when we could stop it.

Danno looked at the kid in front of him. He could tell he was afraid to die, and this might very well kill him, but he could also tell that what he said was true. Danno could tell he was willing to die to get those kids out of there.

Danno took a few moments to think, he didn't want to abandon the kids, but it was impossible to beat the Goblin Lord with all those Goblins surrounding him.

"That's it." Danno muttered and the men and Kenjiro thought he had finally given up and Kenjiro was about to go in there himself. "I know how to save them."

Inside the Goblin nest all of the Goblins surrounded the kids while the Goblin Lord sat on a rock at the back of the nest. His hulking body that was bulging with muscles and strength sat as he stared at the kids that were terrified out of their minds, crying, hugging each other and asking for their moms.

He had never tried a kid before, it would be a new experience. And he was going to enjoy every part of it.

The Goblins were beginning to get a bit rowdy and began shouldering each other to get in front of the circle they had formed. The Goblins closer to the centre of the circle would get to go first after the Goblin Lord.

Then one of them at the back of the circle near the entrance to the nest heard a noise outside of it. It turned its head towards it, making a few noises of confusion before turning its head back to circle and trying to push forward.

But the sounds came back this time, and louder than before. And it seemed more of the Goblins heard it and turned towards it.

And then more noise and more Goblins' attention. And then it finally got the Goblin Lords attention.

It shouted a few things in the Goblin language in a deep voice that scared the kids even more, making them huddle tighter together than before.

All of the Goblins' attention was on the Lord and they responded in agreement although a few complained quietly and any goblin that heard them gave them a smack on the back of the head.

They all moved away from the kids but the Lord didn't and the kids didn't dare to move because of their fear.

The Goblins went to the side of the nest and grabbed their clubs with a tight grip on it, some excited thinking it was some humans, which they voiced to other Goblins near them which got most of them all excited thinking they would have more play things or food.

They all exited the nest and walked forwards fastly towards the sound of the noise which was getting louder and louder as they got closer and closer.

At the source of the noise the people of the village could hear the sounds of small feet getting closer, and the number frightened a few but they steeled their resolve and braced for the incoming fight.

"They're coming! Remember, just stick to the plan!" Sadasue commanded them as he gripped the axe he had in his hand.

The rest stopped hitting their makeshift weapons against the ground or trees and looked as they saw some bushes moving and patches of green charging towards them.

Sadasue remembered how this whole thing came about.

"That's it." Danno muttered and the men and Kenjiro thought he had finally given up and Kenjiro was about to go in there himself. "I know how to save them."

"How?" Kenjiro said with the last of his voice, which only came out as a breath.

"I was only focused on how we would lose. I didn't think we could win." Danno explained, getting excited and happy that could actually save them. "I was focused on numbers and the Goblins Lord together. But what if we separated the two?"

"How would that make a difference?" Sadasue asked. What did it matter if they were separated, that wouldn't decrease the difficulty of it.

"The Goblin Lord has the ability to make things of its own species stronger, not just Goblins although luckily for us there are only Goblins. And if we separated the Goblin from the Goblin Lord, then the extra strength they get from the Lord would be gone, making them easier to kill." Danno explained. They could beat them, they just had to seperate them first.

"Yeah, but how do we do this? We can't just ask them to come out." Tameaki asked, while the rest nodded in agreement with his statement but still trusted Danno to think of a plan.

Danno thought for a moment before it came to him. "The kids." The rest looked like they were going to hit him. "They are kids. It's something everybody says about Goblins, they have the mind of a child. And every child goes to where the most noise is, even if they have a leader doesn't mean they're any smarter."

"What about the Lord? Won't he just come as well?" Sadasue asked.

"Goblin Lords only leave their nests if it gets destroyed, and it isn't destroyed." Danno said. And then he started to explain the plan. "We separate in two groups, one group goes to face the Lord and the other kills all the Goblins."

And then groups were created. Everyone other than Danno was put into group B, the Goblin extermination group. And Danno was alone in group A, the Goblin Lord group.

While Danno was explaining how to get the noise going and how far away they had to be so the Goblins didn't run back if they heard the Goblin Lord in trouble, Kenjiro was writing down in his notebook.

They got to a spot that was far enough away from the nest that they could fight safely. "This is the spot, one minute after I leave, you guys make all the noise you can."

With the affirmation of the people there Danno started to walk away. But before he could Kenjiro stopped him by handing him his notebook on an open page.

Danno read it and looked into Kenjiro's eyes. Danno sighed a little but this also gave him a bit of reassurance. But if the kid wanted to go with him, he wouldn't stop him.

Back in the present Sadasue looked at Goblins that were starting to come into view as some went around and surrounded them. "Go, you two. Make sure to bring them back." He muttered to himself, sort of good luck charm for them in hopes of them actually doing it.

Back at the nest the sounds of fighting were heard from a bit away, with sounds of Goblins screaming and men shouting war cries.

The Goblin Lord of course heard this and decided that they wouldn't be back for a while. So, he decided to start a bit earlier than the others.

He stood up and walked forward, his steps sounding like earthquakes to the kids as they crawled backwards, but slowly as they were scared out of their minds.

But before he could even lay a finger on them, someone swooped down, grabbed the kids and ran away with them to another part of the nest far away from the Lord.

The Lord, outraged that someone would try to take his play things away, he roared so loud that birds in nearby trees flew away and in the village everyone heard the roar of it. But at the other battle field the only sound being heard was the screams of Goblins as they died.

He went to grab the human but another human jumped in front of him and went to slash him with his sword. Which cut his arm, but only a thin line of blood came out which was minuscule compared to what the man was hoping for.

"Damn, you really are a tough mother fucker." Danno said in annoyance.

With the kids and Kenjiro he placed them together at the wall of the nest. He couldn't take them out in fear that they would run into a stray Goblin. So as dangerous as it was here, it was also the safest place.

He put them down and gave each of their heads a quick nuggie. And then he turned around to help out Danno.

"Thank you." He heard one of the kids say to him while the rest were still frozen in shock.

He turned to look at them as he kept walking and gave them a smile with his eyes.

"Hurry up, Kenjiro, damn it!" Danno shouted, he knew how important it was to make sure the kids were safe but the Goblin Lord was getting ready to fight.

Kenjiro nodded and ran as fast as he could towards Danno.

From what Danno had told him before coming here was that the Goblin Lord was strong, but not fast, tough but not flexible. Hopefully they could win this fight.
