Chapter 44: Invitation

For the first time, three of the four chairs in the kitchen were being used. Silas stayed the night at my request. We didn’t get much sleep. We were far too busy making up to worry about sleep.

Silas noticed my momentary daze. “Something wrong?” he asked.

“This is probably going to sound stupid, but this is the first time I’ve had this many people at this table. I always thought it was ridiculous that Grams had four chairs because we never had any company. If she were here, the table would be full for the first time. . .” I trailed off and shrugged. “I don’t know. I just thought it was strange.”

Silas smiled. “I don’t think I’d be here if your grandmother were. I don’t think she would have approved of me staying the night,” he said.

I tilted my head side to side as if to weigh the possibility of what he was saying. “You’re probably right.”

Liz chuckled before taking another bite of her pancake.
