"Mr. President, the chairman has sent for you." Eric, Maxwell's assistant, phoned him. Maxwell was not on seat at the moment. He was just entering the company when he got the call.
"Tell him I'm on my way." Maxwell replied back to his assistant as he was escorted by his men into the company. They took the elevator together to his office floor. He handed a file in his hand to one of the men in black suits as he made for the chairman's office which was on the same floor as his.
Everyone who saw Maxwell greeted him or bowed to show respect to their boss. He didn't answer them as usual; instead, his men replied to their greetings on his behalf.
The chairman, an older man in his late sixties, sat on the sofa away from his official seat as he was sipping hot tea. There was a knock on the door which was followed by the person turning the lock and getting in without an invite. It was Maxwell.
"Ah ha! I was expecting you and here you are." The chairman, Henry exclaimed as he dropped the cup on the center glass table.
Henry is the uncle of Maxwell. He raised him up from a very young age of five after his parents died by falling off a cliff. His younger sister who was a few weeks old then also died with them.
Maxwell sat down on a sofa opposite the chairman. He grabbed a cup of coffee that was on the table. It was an accustomed attitude of his. He was used to taking coffee in the chairman's office and each time he came around, the chairman always had his cup of coffee ready for him so he didn't need any permission before taking it.
"Yes. I'm sure your manager has told you about the contract that is to be signed by you and the conditions attached to it." The chairman gave a bit of an explanation.
"I know of that already." Maxwell replied in a cold manner. His uncle had already gotten used to this attitude of his.
"So what have you done about it? Got any girl you want to settle down with?" The chairman asked him.
"I'm still working on that." Maxwell replied as he took a long sip of his coffee.
"Look Max, we don't have much time. You need to find a bride and get married in ten days or less! Stop playing around boy." The chairman spoke to him in a familiar and non official manner.
"Uncle I'm working on it."
"For how long? What if you don't find the right woman before then or should we terminate the contract?" The chairman asked him in an undisclosed manner. For sure he won't even think of doing such, he only said that to get into the mind of Maxwell.
"I will find someone and if I don't, I'll just pick any girl from the socialite family." Maxwell replied unreasonably.
"That's unreasonable, you know. What if you don't love her?" The chairman asked him as he looked closer at him.
"I don't care about love. You should have known me by now. I'm not after love so it's not a problem for me. I'm only after expanding my company." Maxwell replied.
The chairman looked at him with such a serious face.
"Good. That's more like you. If you give in to love, you'll only fall and it will lead to your death. Don't be like your parents and die early." The chairman said to Maxwell without any sense of humanity.
Maxwell got brainwashed by his uncle a long time ago. He told him that love was the reason why his family all died and left him alone.
If only his father didn't put love before him, he would have been alive.
Henry always told Maxwell not to be like his father and with that, Maxwell never wanted to have anything to do with ladies. It was also pointed to the fact that he disliked his mum which made the hatred he has for women to be worse.
Maxwell took a large gulp of the last content of the cup. Placing it on the table, he got up to take his leave.
"I'll get back to you with my wife." Maxwell jeered.
"I'll be glad to meet her." The chairman smirked in return as he turned for the door.
"Thanks for the coffee." Maxwell appreciated as he took his leave.
He walked back to his office and took his seat. Opening his computer, thoughts of Ava ran through his mind. This wasn't like him, no woman had ever crossed his mind, not even for once. Whatever he needed to deal with in the case of a lady, it always ended that same time and day.
But this time, things were different for him. He felt a part of his heart ache. He saw flashes of what happened that night. He saw himself kissing a woman and even caressing her! That was something he had never done and no woman had ever aroused him to such level!
Even if this particular woman charmed him, he still couldn't fall for her just like that! No way! This wasn't happening at all. He decided to keep away from her and that neighborhood.
He could remember what took him there in the first place. He went to Sherbrooke in search of a client who wanted to meet with him there. He had just left the place when he met with Ava.
"Maxwell…are you okay?" His manager asked him as he waved his hand in front of his face.
"What did you just call me?" Maxwell asked in fury.
"I'm sorry…I'm sorry for calling you directly but I'm your best friend…that's how we relate yes?" Eric asked Maxwell. He was his friend from a young age as they grew up together. Eric was the only friend that Maxwell had since childhood. They met in tenth grade. Eric was also aware of the temper of Maxwell which was spurred because of his parents' death.
