The afternoon sun gilded Berenice's hair and flushed her cheeks. The girl looked at him with sparkling eyes. She was so beautiful and so distant. More and more distant, although she stood so close!
David felt as if someone had hit him on the head with a heavy hammer. That one word answer given by Berenice sounded in his ears like an anvil resonating with a hammer.
One word was enough to totally shock him.

"Oh, I think I talked myself out," blushed the girl. She spoke very quietly. "You probably thought I was the one who gave the announcement."
"I just shot that way," he admitted.
