Chapter 35: Suspicious are We?

My heart stops beating as his hand falls away and lands on his chest. His eyes lay closed, a soft snore escaping from his lips. I sit on top of him, jaw hanging open in confusion and denial. I must’ve heard him wrong. It should’ve been me? What is that even supposed to mean? Do I dare to ask him for clarity when he wakes up?

I quickly climb off of him and focus on taking off my shoes with wobbly knees. My mind spins as I turn on the light, blinking back the brightness. What I really need is some water. A glass and a half later, I’m sitting at my dining room table staring at a sleeping Saz. My finger runs around the rim of the glass as I try to conjure up a solution.

What am I supposed to do now? Part of me just wants to leave him there and go to bed myself. Whatever energy I had left had already been spent walking Saz home. How much longer can I last before I was also snoring the night away?
