Chapter 18

My father seemed to be fine, but I was afraid of the test results. According to the doctor, his kidney failure was already advanced, I wondered why he had not been seeing a doctor if he already had the symptoms . I was going to have to have a talk with him.

Once the nurses took him away, I was left alone with Mr. Davis.

"Your dad is awesome." he told me.

"Yes, he is." that was a fact, he was by far the best father I would have ever dreamed of having.

"Do you feel like you can eat anything now?" he showed me the bag he had brought back.

"I'm not sure I can swallow anything in this place."

"Yet you must!." he insisted. "You won't be of much use to your father if you don't have the strength yourself. Just try at least." I accepted the bag he was handing me. I was about to open it when I saw Drew enter.

"Meg, I heard that..." he cut off when he noticed I wasn't alone. "Your father had woken up." he finished his sentence staring at Mr. Davis.

"Yes,they just took him for some tests." He now wore a white coat over his scrubs and a stethoscope around his neck.

"I think they'll move him to a room after the tests, you could go and ask which room he'll be put in so you can wait for him there, it's more comfortable."

"Thank you Drew."

"You're welcome, my shift just started in case you may need something, I'm here." he gave Mr. Davis one last look before leaving.

"I'll go ask which room he'll be in." I tell Mr Davis and I left the room too. I went to the nurses' office when I saw the doctors running towards the entrance. And the sound of ambulances sounded. I heard one of the doctors shout,

"A student bus has lost the brakes, we need as much help as possible." then the first patient was taken out of the ambulance with his face soaked in blood. Everything was happening so fast that I didn't know what to do, the panic was starting to mount, and without me knowing it, I felt myself dragged out of there, Mr Davis had taken me by the hand. He took me to a corner where I couldn't see what was going on.

"Hey look at me! Are you okay?" I nodded, gasping. It took me a few minutes to recover my senses. Mr. Davis took my head in his hands.

"I'm okey!" I said once that I had regained normal breathing.

"Are you sure?" I nodded again. "Stay here, I'll be back." then he left. So I stood there, remembering what had just happened. I had only looked at the patient for half a second. I don't even want to imagine what would have happened if I had been alone, I would have been paralyzed on the spot and the panic attack would have followed, maybe I would even have fainted. Luckily he had the presence of mind to get me out of there.

He came back a few minutes later, my suitcase in his hands, as well as the jacket that I had left in the cubicle and the small bag that contained food.

"Here we go" I took the bag and the jacket from his hands. And he led me to an elevator. It opened and two nurses came out and then we entered. I felt his worried gaze on me, I remained silent until we got out.

"It's room 223" he told me, we started looking for him. Once we had found it, we went inside.

It was more comfortable than the ER. There was a big sofa there and also a chair near the bed. I sat directly on the sofa, I was starting to have headaches. Surely because of the fatigue I had accumulated, I had barely slept the night before and with the flight, and all the stress, not to mention that I hadn't eaten anything. I laid my head on the backrest, and closed my eyes a little.

"You need to eat a something." he pulled out the chair that was near the bed, and sat down facing me. He opened the bag and took out a soda, he opened it and handed it to me, then he took a sandwich inside.

"I hope you like the pepperoni turkey ciabatta and chews." I loved any kind of sandwich, but was I going to be able to eat while he watched. It was out of the question. So I took the sandwich he handed me.

"I'll only eat it if we share it." he looked at me surprised.

"No way, this sandwich is for you." he answered authoritatively.

"I refuse to eat while you're watching me, I'm sure you too haven't eaten for a long time." he hesitated for a moment.

"We only share it if you promise we'll go eat again later."

"Deal." I split the sandwich in half and gave him one part.

Five minutes later we had finished eating, I had realized that I was really hungry. After throwing the bags in the garbage can in the bedroom, he came back to sit down.

"Thank you for everything you've done. I'm glad you're here" I told him, but it was a way of admitting it to myself. He nodded with a grin.
