Chapter 11: Greg's POV

I went directly to my residence at Hudson Yards, I had thought of going to the office but I changed my mind, I didn't want anyone to know that I was back. So I called Ashley, my assistant, to bring me some files, telling her not to tell anyone. I knew I could count on her. It was my father who had hired her and she had been loyal to him for 5 years. After that I called my lawyers, I wanted to be ready in case the shareholders decided to take things far, even if I hoped they won't. Afterwards I phoned Fred the manager of Skylight to inform him that I would be away for a few days. Then I called Gina, but she didn't respond so I left her a message to inform her that I had to come back to New York.

While waiting for Ashley to arrive, I took a shower and checked my emails.

She arrived at 6:45 p.m., her arms full of files.

"I warn you immediately, overtime will be charged." She announced me at the exit of the elevator. Few people had the right to come here, it was the first thing I had acquired after I began to own my own money, and only my mother, my sister, Matt and Ashley had already come. I am a person extremely attached to my intimacy. I have a second apartment on the Upper East Side, that's where I took all the girls I saw. I rarely went there and I was not attached to it like this one.

"If I may say so sir, I'm very glad you're back."

"Thank you Ashley." Ashley was a tall woman in her thirties. It was pleasant to work with her because she was sunny and always in a good mood.

"But tell me, didn't you notice anything about the plot against me." She reflected for a moment.

"Actually, a few days ago Mr O'Connell asked me to give him records of the transactions made since Mr George's death. Now that I think about it, that should have tipped me off. I'm sorry."

"No it's not your fault."

"Ah another thing, there's Miss Mackenzie who came to ask me about your schedules." she was talking about Macy Mackenzie, my girlfriend.

"I hope you didn't give it to her?"

"No, who do you think I am?"

We laughed, and then she added.

"If I may be indiscreet sir, you deserve better than that young lady."

I looked at her, and for once I agreed with her. It never bothered me that we were always boxed together with Macy. She was a beautiful girl, popular and above all she was the daughter of the most important shareholder of Davis Energy Co. I had never had real feelings for her, our relationship was only limited to showing up together in public and having sex after that, and that was all. Even if everyone thought we were together, it never bothered me to cheat on her. I think that the fact that everyone saw her as the perfect woman for me suited her, because she never complained.

I come from a traditional family, for which marriage is important and since I had become famous, not as the son of George Davis, but as Greg Davis the man of the night, I knew that I was going to face profiteers who will only care about my money, so I had always had the mentality that I would marry a girl from the same social class as me. Macy's had been an impersonal choice, if we ever got married it would be a business wedding.

But I always told myself that even my parents' marriage had been a business marriage and they had lived together all their lives. So I figured if one day I had to marry Macy, I wouldn't mind.

But my outlook on things had changed recently, and the reason was more than obvious.

Since my mother announced that we write soon going to be engaged , the rumor has been circulating in the tabloids about our potential engagement, some people even thought that we were already engaged. But I had never made my marriage proposal to her, I had just talked about it with my mother that "maybe" I had made it clear, we will get engaged soon. But that was before I saw Miss Wyatt again, and she turned my whole mind upside down. She even made me question my plans for the future. Today on the plane I thought I'd deny the gossip and say that me and Macy weren't getting married. But I told myself that I had to talk to her first.

Ashley only stayed for an hour, during which we went through all the reports from the ongoing projects. After she left I ordered food and while I was eating, the image of the day I had dinner with Miss Wyatt in the office came back to my mind which made me smile. She had seemed shy to me at the time, but I've come to know that she is anything but shy, I loved that she said what she thought without worrying about the repercussions. Like the day she told me that some people were forced to work to live. It had stayed on my mind, I didn't understand why she was so attached to her jobs that much, already the Skylight salary could be enough to pay part of her rent and support her for a whole month. So I didn't understand why she had to take a second job, and from what I understood, she didn't want to miss a single day's pay and she also wanted tips a lot. I told myself that she just wanted to save money, but when she came to tell me that she didn't want her sick leave, I started to tell myself that there was something else that pushed her to work that much. And I was piqued with curiosity to know what. In other circumstances I would have tried to find out at all costs, but there for some reason, I told myself that I had to respect her privacy.

This woman was completely changing me and it had only been a few days since I had seen her again.

I went to bed at 9 p.m., as I had nothing else to do because I had to wake up very early.

At 6 a.m. the next day, I was already in my office at the Davis Energy Co. Waiting impatiently for the shareholders' meeting to begin.
