"Director, you want... to study mutants?!" Natasha couldn't help but recall the inhumane experiments she had seen in SHIELD files. "Although the military has been secretly conducting experiments on mutants, it's not visible. Do we really have to..."
"Just as a precaution, Natasha!"
Nick Fury's voice softened slightly.
He knew that Natasha had undergone dehumanizing training at the Red Room, so he understood her aversion to such experiments.
This order was likely to meet resistance from her.
To prevent his best agent from overthinking, Nick Fury hesitated and explained, "Well, Natasha, I actually know the identities of these mutants!"
Natasha was taken aback. "You know?!"
"That's right!"
Nick Fury quickly continued, "They belong to the X-Men, a team led by a top-tier mutant. They are a faction within the mutant community that leans towards the human side and is dedicated to fighting mutant crimes..."
He had to admit that the X-Men's years of existence had been a failure.
Despite their numerous acts of saving the world, they had little reputation. Only a select few among the official human forces were aware of their existence.
This was partly due to their low-profile approach. But deliberate official censorship was also to blame.
Otherwise, Black Widow, a Level 9 SHIELD agent, wouldn't be completely oblivious to them.
However, due to the live broadcast of the expo, the X-Men had suddenly become highly visible. It was impossible to conceal their existence any longer.
Director Nick Fury had no choice but to reveal to his subordinates, "According to top-secret information, this mutant called Wolverine was once part of the military's Weapon X program. His abilities include a regenerative healing factor and bone claws made of adamantium alloy. He can even survive being shot in the head..."
"Under normal circumstances, it would be impossible for him to be blown up like this by a howitzer. There must be another reason for his current condition..."
"If we can secure his body, it will provide us with leverage to establish contact with that top-tier mutant..."
"But the most crucial point is that the X-Men have never been so high-profile..."
"I have a feeling that what happened today might be secretly orchestrated by an unseen hand... Ineed to know the truth, Natasha... Do you understand?"
After expressing his thoughts in one breath, Nick Fury believed he had been gentle enough with his subordinate.
However, to his surprise, Natasha remained silent for a long time after hearing his words.
A trace of sullenness quietly crept into her heart. "Natasha..."
"Director, did you just say that this guy can come back to life even after death?"
After a long pause, Natasha's voice broke the silence.
Nick Fury was perplexed. "That's what the intelligence reports indicate. What's the matter?"
"I think I overlooked something..."
Natasha sighed softly. "Why did the other three mutants hand over their seriously injured comrade to me without any concern and just drive behind us? According to common sense, they should have left at least one person in the car to take care of him, right?"
Nick Fury's voice suddenly turned serious. "What do you mean?"
"It means... this guy may not be what we saw at all. He might not be seriously injured!"
Natasha expressed her suspicion.
Nick Fury was shocked. "How can you be so sure?!"
"Because he's gone!"
The car had pulled over to the side of the road, and Natasha turned her head to gaze at the empty backseat, wearing an extremely grim expression. "I don't know when or how, but... he suddenly disappeared!"
She felt as though she had been played for a fool.
"Disappeared?!"
Nick Fury gasped.
His shock wasn't due to Wolverine's sudden disappearance, nor because Wolverine was suspected of feigning his injuries, nor even because the X-Men were likely to make a high-profile appearance tonight, which was likely not a coincidence...
All of these factors, given a little time and more information, he could have figured out.
What left him dumbfounded was the sheer unbelievability of the situation!
Could it be...
Are the X-Men...
Putting on a show?!
"Shit!!"
The thought of this possibility made Nick Fury's scalp tingle.
Although the widespread emergence of mutants had garnered the attention of nations worldwide, and many people were concerned about the perceived threat mutants posed to humanity, for someone at his level, mutants were never a major concern.
The vast majority of mutants were incredibly weak. And the small number of powerful mutants were divided into two camps.
Professor X? Just a well-meaning old man with impressive abilities.
Magneto? A lunatic obsessed with playing games and rallying mutants to fight against humans.
Not to mention that whatever Magneto tried, Professor X's faction would counter it.
And even if Magneto succeeded, humans had numerous means to deal with the situation.
The military had their X-Weapon program, the super soldier program... various covert biochemical transformations, genetic modification labs... and SHIELD possessed the Tesseract, Captain Marvel...
And the Avengers Initiative was in progress... There were too many cards in play.
Due to these reasons, Nick Fury rarely paid attention to mutants. His focus was on the safety of the universe, extraterrestrial civilizations, and the entire planet!
To a certain extent, he looked down on mutants. When it was truly necessary, it was already a great honor for him to recruit a few powerful mutants to work under his command.
Because he never believed that superpowers were everything. As an ordinary person, he relied on his intellect and resources to wield the immense power of SHIELD.
And in his opinion, neither Professor X nor Magneto possessed that. But now, the situation seemed to have changed!
A high-profile appearance... deliberately playing the victim... winning public sympathy...
What were the X-Men up to?
He wasn't afraid of mutants having superpowers; he was afraid of mutants having brains.
"It seems I need to have a chat with Professor X!"
Nick Fury muttered to himself and suddenly realized that there were some unknown changes happening within the group of mutants he had been neglecting.
He despised change. Because change meant losing control!l.
