“And it was nice to meet you,” she said to me. “Don’t squeeze her too tightly. We don’t want her broken.” She gave Car an air-kiss, finger-waved at me, and went bouncing off down the street.

Car saw the look on my face as I watched Cherry walk away.

“Yes,” Car said. “Thank God she’s one of a kind.” 11

The next night we were getting ready to go to the party.

“What do you want me to wear?” I asked.

“Wear the white suit with a bright shirt…the skimpier, the better. And wear the high-heeled white sandals.”

“Are you ready for me to be that tall? I’ll tower over you.”

“Yes. I want you to stand out. I want everyone to see you.”

I shrugged.

“And let’s take the skiff. It’s too far to walk. They’re at the other end of the harbor.”

“Whatever you want, Darling,” I said as I took her into my arms and kissed her.

“And let me do your make-up so it’s perfect. This will be a wonderful party.”
