A saint was looking forward to the afterlife. Protos began his journey of life during wartime. His father was killed in battle, defending his town from invaders, while Protos' mother ran away into the wilderness with a baby in her arms. She wandered the forest exhausted and starving, until she found a stranger sent to her from above. It was an old lady, an abbess of a nearby monastery.
"Come with me, Agnes," said the Abbess to the mother, "I will take care of you!"
"How do you know my name?" The mother asked, amazed.
"My heart told me," replied the Abbess kindly. She looked at the baby, "poor child, thank God I found you!"
She took the woman and her child into the monastery and fed them. Agnes became a nun, and little Protos grew in the monastery into a wise and virtuous youth. When he turned 16 years of age, he spoke to his mother about God's will for him.
"I must leave the monastery and follow God on the way to eternity." Said Protos.
Agnes cried, but let him go.
