“Slow down,” Conley replied calmly. “I haven’t told you because I didn’t want it to influence how you felt about me.”

“You knew I was coming into money. Did that influence you?” Brian asked angrily.

“Of course not. What you’ve inherited isn’t close to what I have. You need to realize I’ve been around forever. I’ve made investments that have multiplied over the years. A lot of years, actually. Why was I working for Alistair? He was my friend and he asked me to help him out. Why did I get the job at the bookstore? I didn’t want to hang around doing nothing. You might have thought I was using you.”
