“Perfect,” he murmured when he came to a stop at one of the shelves holding small hand-carved and painted sculptures. What had caught his eye was a Phoenix, perhaps ten inches tall, its wings outspread as if it was about to fly away. He looked back at Conley, seeing he was totally involved in choosing ornaments. Then he took the Phoenix from the shelf, impressed by the intricate work on the feathers and head.

“That’s a beautiful piece,” one of the shop’s clerks commented as she came up beside him. “Are you interested in buying it?”

“I am, but…” He glanced at Conley. Thankfully, he had his back to him at the moment.
