meshing ideas

The cages were everywhere in large clusters of metal. Some were stacked in piles leading up to what might as well be the sky. Others hung from the ceiling with rope or cords. At the very back of it all, was a massive wooden door braced with metal.

I couldn't help but be awestruck as I stared at how much of it there was.

Until the sound of crying snapped me out of it. It was there, a mournful cry of anguish and fear piercing the silence. It echoed off the magnitude of the room giving the feeling of multiple people, yet compounding the essence of loneliness there.

My first instinct was to fly up to get a better view, but the reality was somewhat cruel.

"Oof."

I sat up, trying to ignore the still ringing pain from waking up.

'What the?'

I turned myself over to get a good look at my wings. I saw that there seemed to be a kind of clear resin covering my wings. That's when I remembered the liquid they lathered earlier.

'S**t'

The resin trapped my wings in a single form. The resin wasn't particularly heavy but it did stop me from folding them in. They reminded me of an insect's wings trapped in amber.

'Whatever, I'll figure it out when I get back.'

I went up to the mesh of the cage and noticed that it had a little give. The space between the wire was an empty square the size of my head. It wasn't barbed wire, not that it made sense to make wire that small.

I decided to crouch down and investigate the cage floor. No good. The mesh went under the floor and came back up, halving the space of the gaps.

Eyeing the space of the larger gaps, I compared them to my blockier wings. The pain must have been muddling my common sense because I did the stupidest thing I have ever done in my life.

'Alright, here we go.'

I went ahead and climbed up the mesh wall until I was a centimeter away from where it overlapped.

I took a few moments to mentally brace myself and take a few deep breaths.

'Let's do this.'

It was then that I shoved my head through the gap in the mesh.

'Okay, now for the hard part.'

Positioning my feet securely so that I wouldn't fall, I let go of the mesh wall with my hands.

'Okay, okay.'

I slowly moved my arms to my sides, trying to make sure that I don't lose my balance.

'Okay.'

It was then that I started worming my torso into a space much too small for what it was meant for.

The wires struggled to stay in form. The cage creaked and shuddered at my attempt.

It was only after I managed to get past my shoulders by a good chunk that I relaxed and let out a sigh.

'Well, time for the rest of it.'

From there I was able to safely, and foolishly, get the rest of my body out of the cage.

It was then that I realized a very important detail.

'Oh, it looks like my cage is one of the hanging ones...'

"Aw s**t."

Rapidly grabbing the mesh with my hands, I felt myself spinning myself upright as the back of my legs crashed into the cage.

I took a moment to catch my breath before turning myself to face the cage to get a better grip.

That's when I noticed it.

"Oh, yeah, the door. I could've picked the lock, couldn't I?"
