It Almost Sounds Like You Care

I bite down harder on my lip. The split that was healing cracks open again. Blood pools in my mouth. The metallic taste in my mouth is an afterthought.

“Dagon, you asshole! Wake up!” I call out in frustration. “Please! You cannot be dead! You cannot!” a single tear rolls down my cheek. My breathing is shallow as I look over my shoulder at the torture-device wall. I quickly stumble over and pull a random knife from the wall. I run back to the table and hold the blade underneath his nose.

“Breathe, you idiot!” I scream in desperation, staring at the blade. Hoping to see it fog over. The sign he is still breathing. Without looking away from the blade, I place my fingers back against his neck, trying to feel his pulse again.

“Come on, Dagon. You cannot do this to me.” The next tear finds its way out of my eyes. I am trembling so badly; my legs are seconds away from giving out.
