Chapter 31

“They’re on to us.”

“Damn.”

Nick grumbled when herded into the back of the ambulance. But the technicians let him pull medical rank and sit beside John’s gurney instead of being seated on one of his own.

He nodded, both approving and amused when they ignored John’s protests and strapped him in. He held John’s hand, rubbing the callused fingers between his own while they hooked John up to the monitors and injected him with a mild painkiller after a check of his vitals and approval from the hospital they were headed to.

The radio squelched and fuzzed in the background, muting the paramedics’ conversation. John’s eyes drooped closed as the vehicle pulled away from the scene. He hadn’t given in to the inevitable until Bobby promised to meet them at the hospital and fill John in. “Don’t forget,” he muttered, his words slurring. “We got a date tonight.”

“Dinner with your sister.” Nick squeezed his hand. “I remember.”
