Chapter 108 - Mustard Gas

Walking towards the corner was probably the most stressful thing I've ever done since I've become the proxy leader of Mount Weather. No matter how much the remaining guards and Zoe would have loved to shoot the grounders that came to get me, I didn't let them, after all, I was there to have four grounders killed.

For some reason, the grounders didn't take me to meet their leader further away from the corner, maybe because of the same reason I didn't let my people shoot at them. Nevertheless, a few minutes later, a man clad in metal armor walked from within the crowd of armed warriors looking as menacing as a squirrel on drugs.

"Would you look at that? Well, you have some guts to come to my camp, Skykru Osleya . So what do I own the displeasure of meeting the man who killed tens of my men?

The enemy leader gazed out at the piles of bodies with its windrows and heaps of mutilated figures, before glancing at me once more, expecting an answer from me.

"This war of ours had left both sides with casualties. I won't lie to you, I want to achieve peace, that's why I've come here to talk with you, hoping we can end this pointless bloodshed. I for one don't like Pike and his way of leading my people, but I won't stand and watch how my people are massacred either."

"Very impressive, Osleya. Very impressive indeed, but have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe we don't want peace? We have more warriors than you have bullets and we aren't scared of dying for our commander, unlike your people."

"There are a lot of your men down here right now who would be dead or dying if you don't accept my offer. I can promise you that if you continue this battle, by the end of the day, none of your men would ever return home alive."

"You gambled on our meeting, didn't you?"

"Yes, as I said before, I want peace for both of our people."

"Why now, after you killed hundreds of my warriors? Maybe it's because you have found out that our late commander died?"

Nothing could have prepared me for hearing this, especially from my supposed enemy. However, that wasn't the worst thing that came to mind, not even close. While Lexa was, how should I say it, not exactly bad, she wasn't a tyrant either. Unfortunately, for us, either whoever become the next commander was an Azgeda or had some sort of persona grudge against us, maybe a little bit of both.

"Judging by the face you made when you heard that we have a new commander could only mean one thing. You haven't gotten any help from Arkadia in the past week or so, didn't you? "

I couldn't bring myself to answer him, however, the truth was that he nailed it. Now that he got what he wanted, there was no chance a bloodthirsty leader like him would even think about leaving us alone when he had a clear way of getting into the mountain once the rest of my people are killed.

Since there was no point remaining any longer here, I simply turned away and walked away, leaving the grounders shocked by what I was doing. Some of them thought that I would beg for mercy or even offer my services to their leader, but instead of doing that, I simply walked away, not giving a damn about them anymore.

Before I could even walk, a few meters, a spear flew past my head, missing me by a tiny bit. Not wanting to be rude, I threw the spear back impaling the grounder that threw it into the tunnel's wall, prompting the rest of his friends to attack me.

Sadly for them, I was quite close enough to the corner for their arrows and spear to miss me. Some of the braver warriors chase after me, only to meet their end at the hands of my soldiers' guns.

By the time, I reached our line, eleven grounders died trying to earn the favor of their leader. Quite a sad way to die, but this is war.

"I told you that this would be a bad idea. I take me are still at war with them?"

"Unfortunately for us, they have a new commander, one that is either Azgeda or has a grudge against us."

"Just what we needed…so I guess we are using that on them?"

"We have to, otherwise, they would never stop attacking us. And while we might be able to resist a week or two with what ammo we have left, we won't win if we are to fight in a big melee against them."

"So how are we going to do it then?"

"We are attacking them, with me and one volunteer in the lead using the modified flamethrowers to effectively destroy the grounders. So get all of our people ready, this will be our last battle."

Not long afterward, we launched our attack, and soon as we walk past that corner, after we grenade the hell out of them, I together with Mike unleash true hell on the grounders in the form of mustard gas, one of the most dangerous things humanity had made. Just as I walked into the next tunnel, a shattered body flew into the wall behind me or rather poured over me. However, that wasn't what shocked me the most, not even close. A few meters away, men twist on the ground in pain and suffering without being able to save themselves. The further we advance, the gruesome the tunnels become with grounders cutting out their own legs and arms in a futile attempt to stop the gas from hurting their bare skin. Alas, in the end, eight hundred more warriors found their eternal rest in that tunnel, with no survivor left to tell the horrors of what happened down here.

Meanwhile, in a cave far away from Polis, Anya woke to the feeling of soft little fingers gently cleaning over the scar on her shoulder. As soon she realizes that Anya woke up, Clarke's eyes showed, for the first

"I didn't want to wake you…"

Anya waved off the girl's senseless apology. Despite being injured quite badly by that traitor, she was grateful to Clarke for getting her out of that place, especially after Ontari killed her friend and commander.

"Does it still hurt?"

"A little, but it's getting better than yesterday. Where are we anyways?"

"Murphy sacrificed himself so that we can leave so you better not lie to me. Anyways, we are a few kilometers away from Niylah's home. I plan to go there and hide, at least until we figure out what to do with Ontari and Pike."

"Getting to Leon should be our next move, Clarke. He's probably stuck in mount Weather thanks to Ontari."

"I don't know, Anya. While I trust Leon, Raven, Wells, and Monroe, I can't trust the rest of the people that are there."

"So what do you propose we do then? Hide and hope for the best?"

"Right now? That's probably our best bet. You are injured quite badly and whether you like it or not, you will not help anyone if you can't even use your arm. We can try to contact Kane and Leon, though I don't know if both of them are still on our side. At least I hope so."
