Chapter 109 - The moment when the predator become the prey

"You two check the body!"

Strange and unexpected as it was, Pike still decided to assess the body before he makes a decision. Especially, when the now-dead grounder came from Mount Weather's direction. Whatever happened there is what killed the grounder, and that is precisely what Pike wants to find out.

The two guards quickly checked the body for any bullet wounds, but other than some burns and blisters on the face and hands, there was nothing that could have indicated how the grounder could have died. They even checked the horse and yet they found nothing else other than the same burns and blisters as on the grounder. As soon as they realized that, there is nothing they could do to exactly indicate the cause of death, both of them returned to report.

"Sir, there are no obvious bullet or cold weapons wounds on the bodies. However, we found some burn damage and blisters on both of them, but nothing that could have indicated how they died."

"Have you checked the burns? Maybe it's related to their death."

"We tried, sir, but in all honesty, the burns are all over the bodies, albeit not covering the whole body as. It's more in small parts, but one interesting thing is how the grounder and his horse have their eyes damaged beyond repair. At least that's how it looks to me, sir."

"Hmm, tell me, soldier, did you notice some kind of smell? Like sweet or sour?"

"Now that you have mentioned it, sir it kind of smelled like burned garlic for some reason, but we all know that the grounders aren't exactly the most hygienic people."

As soon as he heard, that Pike turned towards his old friend. While Kane didn't hear everything, he did get a few bits and pieces from what happened and since Mount Weather was under constant attacks, it wasn't exactly rocket science to realize that in that place something must have happened for the grounders to leave in such a hurry.

"I take it you heard my conversation. So, does this remind you of something, Marcus?"

"One of your history books had something similar if I recall correctly. It was an old book about the first world war and the horrors that were unleashed in that time."

"More precisely it was about the first use of gas attacks by the German army in 1917. What my men described is exactly that. I don't know how or why that boy made mustard gas, but one thing is for sure. Mount Weather would not fall in the hands of grounders as long as he stands. Nevertheless, we are wasting our time here, so let's get moving people. We have a few more traitors to catch before we can reinforce the mountain."

"Wait, Pike!"

"What's the problem, Marcus?"

"Shouldn't we send someone back to Arkadia to tell them about Mount Weather?"

"Karl, you got back and inform Byrne of what happened here. Tell her to send a team or two to assist Leon. Just in case that boy didn't manage to send all of the grounders to hell."

Kane and his group were held at gunpoint the whole journey as if they were some kind of terrorists. Moreover, while Bellamy's choice of walking down this particular path seemed strangely convenient for them, other than Monty and Octavia, who were blinded by anger, the rest of the group realized what Bellamy was doing. Rather than leading Pike through the safer route toward the cave, Bellamy decided to use the path that was closer to the blockade, hoping that the grounders would see them and capture Pike, thus saving them from what the New Chancellor was planning to do with them.

For Octavia however, everything was a nightmare. Her lover was killed in front of her eyes, and her brother become the reason for that, at least to some extent. She should have listened to what her teacher said about Bellamy, but no, she kept lying to herself that her big brother wasn't a monster. In the end, she was right about one thing. Her brother wasn't a monster, he was far worse than that.

Despite that for her, her brother would always remain her brother no matter what happen to them. Even when she had her knife at his neck, she wouldn't have done it. She could bear watching her last living relative dying because of her, not again and never again.

"Hold on. Son are you sure, you know the way? Because it seems to me that we aren't getting there." "The cave's just on the other side, sir. Just a few tens of meters from here."

"If you say so. Keep a sharp eye out people. We are dangerously close to grounder's territory."

The group continued down the trail, with Bellamy leading the way, bringing everyone closer to the blockade than Pike would have loved. All of a sudden, a horn was blown in the vicinity, causing Pike and his soldier to prepare themselves.

"The blockade! Anybody got eyes on them?"

"There's nothing here sir!"

"We need a better position! Back to higher ground!" Before Pike or his goons could react, Bellamy reached forward and grabbed his former leader's pistol, aiming it at the man's back.

"Drop your weapon!"

"What the hell are you doing Bellamy?"

"Drop your weapon! I won't say it again!"

While everyone was confused by what was going on, Sergey and Miller, followed shortly by Octavia and Monty quickly disarmed the soldiers that were supposed to watch over them, grabbing their weapons before aiming them at them.

"We bring you Chancellor Pike of the Sky People! O, please translate what I've just said to the grounders."

"You doomed us all."

"We give you the man who started this war. Lift this blockade."

Out of nowhere, tens of grounders surrounded their position aiming their bows at Pike and his soldiers, while surprisingly not caring all that much about Kane and his group. Just as everything seemed to have ended, Octavia lunged at Pike, most likely wanting to avenge Lincoln, sadly for her, a towering figure walked out of the crowd of grounders before quickly disarming the girl.

"Calm down girl. I know that you have that man, but we need him alive if we ever want to have peace between our people. Moreover, even if you kill him, that won't bring your man back to life."

"Good to see Gustus. I thought you bite the dust when we heard what happened in Polis."

"I swore to protect the commander, whoever he or she would be and that's what I plan to do. That's also the reason you aren't dead right now. Now, let's go, we have a war to end and people to judge."
