The sound of seagulls, the scent of salt, and the sound of breaking waves.

"Now that's life."

Mark Tormeto was enjoying the cruise in the deck chair on the ship's deck, which allowed him to see the immensity of the ocean and have the warmth of the sun caressing his body. As he relaxed he felt soft hands covering his eyes.

"Guess who it is?"

Hearing the voice Mark showed a sly smile, which however could not hide the happiness he felt.

"Hmm who knows who she is, the voice is familiar... you are not by chance the most beautiful and fantastic woman I could ever marry."

Hearing Mark's answer, the woman, Selene Caire, couldn't help but take her hands out of his eyes.

"Don't you feel embarrassed even a little to say these phrases in public?"

"I would be embarrassed if what I said was untrue but since it's all true what I should be embarrassed about," -Mark explained seriously.

Seeing the seriousness with which Mark said it, she couldn't help but show a smile, even if you could see how embarrassed she was by the redness on her cheeks. Mark invited her to lie down with him and she happily accepted leaning against his chest. As he held her in his arms he couldn't help but be fascinated by her long blonde hair and emerald green eyes, all genes were taken from her mother, in comparison, he was quite normal with brown hair and 1.70 meters tall, the only feature he had was his eyes a mix between green and brown.

Lying together and enjoying the view, Mark began to think about his whole life.

He was born into a loving family and was an only child. A year after his birth, Selene's family moved into the house next to their and the two families became very close over time. Mark and Selene were the same age and being neighbors they spent a lot of time together, but the young Mark didn't care and preferred being with other guys than spending time with her. Instead, Selena wanted him to spend more time with him, for this reason they almost always quarreled.

Mark's life was happy with a kind family, popular with friends, good at sports, but one day in the penultimate year of high school he was called back by the principal. As he walked he wondered why he was called, he was not a model student but he was above average, with these thoughts in mind he came to the principal's door and knocked waiting for an answer.

"You can enter." -Came the headmaster's voice.

Once inside he was surprised because in addition to the headmaster there was also Selene's father.

"Sit down boy we got some news about your parents," -Said the headmaster.

"Did something happen? They told me they were going to a convention." -Mark replied worriedly as he sat down.

The headmaster looked at Selene's father who nodded to continue the talk.

"While your parents were driving down the highway they had an accident. A tanker car that contained flammable material lost control after it hit a pothole in the road and crashed into the traffic island, unfortunately, your parents were near the explosion range. "

On hearing the news, Mark's complexion went white, his body was covered in a layer of cold sweat and he felt dizzy.

"Are my... are my parents okay? They are not injured, are they?!" -Mark said wearily and frightened.

"Unfortunately your parents are in critical condition, the paramedics came as soon as possible and were immediately taken to intensive care" -Replied Selena's father, who, being a doctor, had received the information from a friend who worked in the hospital.

At that point Mark could no longer hear what they were saying to him, he was so shocked that he did not even realize that Selena's father had taken him to the hospital and while they were waiting in the waiting room they were joined by Selena and her mother, who as soon as they saw him they hugged him to convey all their comfort and warmth, finally helping him to relax.

The hours that passed seemed endless and when the doors finally opened the doctor in charge of the operation said: "We did our best but the injuries to the organs were too much. I'm sorry."

Mark didn't have many memories of that scene. He only remembered the he blamed the doctors, which he regrets even now. Technically they had done their best but he needed to vent his feelings.

Some days later the funeral was held, the number of people was many due to the popularity of his parents. His father was a famous computer scientist and the mother worked in the field of robotics and both of them won various awards. That day he received a lot condolences from everyone, to which he replied mechanically, because he was too tired of replying to people he had never met.

After the funeral he immediately went to his house and locked himself inside the room. Being a minor his custody had to pass to one of the relatives, but he didn't have one, so his custody was given to the neighbors, who tried to convince him to stay with them, but Mark wanted to stay alone and they coludn't do anything about that.

In the dark bedroom, you could see Mark lying on the bed, trying to sleep but he couldn't. His heart was filled with sadness for the loss of his parents, but hidden in his heart was another feeling that he felt disgusted and it was gratification.
