I haven't explained this Snape story yet. At least not in detail, and I don't know if I will get into that. But basically, he turned to Dumbledore, the moment Lily became a target, so before Voldemort sent people to kill her and her family. After the Dark Lord's defeat, Snape decided to stay on the light side for two good reasons. One, it was the only way to avoid going to jail for his crimes, and Two...he did not agree with Voldemort's ways. He had no reason to continue to be a Death Eater after Voldemort's disappearance and in fact, he completely betrayed them and got his mark removed (or at least that's what he thinks). That's why he cannot work as a spy this time. I will try to get a bit more background for him, if it fits well in the story since I already got him more involved.
