Chapter 53 - Dawn of a New Day

After a largely sleepless night spent tossing and turning in bed due to the sheer excitement and anticipation still coursing potently through his veins following the positively monumental events of the previous day, Eric required his mother Lady Ellara's gentle rousing the next morn just to fully awaken.

He had restlessly drifted in and out of vivid dreams filled with cryptic occult symbols and personal prophecies involving both himself and the exotic and enigmatic Lady Seraphina until the soft dawn light filtering through his bedchamber curtains had finally succeeded in stirring him to wakefulness.

Still blinking residual sleep from his eyes and stifling a yawn, Eric swiftly washed up, dressed in simple wool and linen clothes well-suited for flexibility during physical training, neatly combed his golden hair, and then made his way downstairs, faithful Shadow trotting dutifully along at his heel.

Despite having just woken as well, the stalwart wolf somehow managed to project an innate air of dignified vigilance and alertness that eluded most humans before they properly caffeinated.

Together boy and beast entered the stately dining hall where the full Emberhart family customarily gathered to break their nightly fast with conversation and camaraderie. They found Lady Seraphina already comfortably seated at the long ornamental oak table, passively conversing with Eric's lord father and lady mother over fragrant tea, toast and sizzling sausages as a manservant politely refilled their drinks.

The last stubborn remnants of weariness still clinging to Eric's mind rapidly evaporated entirely upon seeing his new mentor seated and ready to officially begin their first full day of apprenticeship. Tamping down his surging exhilaration, he maintained a veneer of calm and poise.

"Good morning honored father, kind mother," Eric greeted with a short yet respectable bow once their casual conversation naturally lulled. Then, turning to directly face Seraphina, he bowed even deeper at the waist to properly show deference. "And an especially fine morning to you as well, Master Seraphina."

Ever-attentive Shadow emitted a sort of dignified acknowledging gruff "harrumph", as if determined to play his own humble part in the formalities of the morning so as not to be outdone by Eric in etiquette. Though outwardly maintaining perfect composure, inwardly Eric felt his mind continue reeling, scarcely able to comprehend that his epic journey unraveling mysteries of the arcane had finally, tangibly begun under Lady Seraphina's peerless guidance.

As the group broke their nightly fast, Eric's lord father Alaric and Lady Seraphina appeared to have already become well acquainted, chatting casually about various far-flung lands they had both travelled to over the course of long, well-seasoned lives. Apparently the two had even once crossed paths briefly a handful of years prior at an exclusive symposium on the ethereal plenum held in the uncharted mystic forests of Svartalfheim by the reclusive and enigmatic Dokkálfar faction of northern elves.

However, about midway through the meal during a natural lull in animated conversation, Seraphina's intense violet gaze suddenly turned and lingered scrutinizingly upon Shadow where he lay curled at Eric's feet. "Fascinating. An exceedingly unique and intelligent companion you have somehow acquired from somewhere, young Eric," she mused. "There is something distinctive - a subtle yet palpable arcane energy or presence - that decidedly sets him apart from mundane beasts of flesh and fur..."

Lord Emberhart nodded sagely, looking down to meet Shadow's own silent piercing yellow eyes. "An excellent observation, my lady. In truth his exact origin remains shrouded in mystery. I discovered the gravely injured pup abandoned on the outskirts of our territory border years ago and chose to bring him back to the estate and nurse him carefully back to full health. But you are quite right in your assessment - the creature's intellect and talents clearly hint at...unnatural origins likely not of this mortal sphere."

"How very interesting..." Seraphina murmured, continuing to regard the stately wolf still seated upright and proud as ever at Eric's side with newfound curiosity and subtly intensifying scrutiny. Or was it merely his imagination playing tricks in the dim light, or did Eric detect Shadow's fur ever so slightly bristling with hackles raised as he in turn stared back unwaveringly to meet Seraphina's piercing gaze for a long moment before seeming to catch himself and smoothly resume eating? But it lasted only a blink before the enigmatic wolf's body language again relaxed into nonchalance.

After the scrumptious morning meal had concluded on that somewhat enigmatic note, Lady Seraphina tactfully advised her new apprentice Eric to take some time attending to any necessary preparations in private, and then promptly meet her within the hour down in the quiet east courtyard garden so they could officially commence structured magical training together at long last. Eric had to focus every shred of hard-won self-discipline on subtly steadying his breathing and avoiding visibly trembling in delirious excitement and anticipation. For at last, after so many cycles of uncertainty, this bright new day had finally dawned - one brimming with luminous promise and once unimaginable potential. Their true epic journey was only just beginning...
