Chapter 5

Emily rushed into Michael's dark-colored car as he drove out of the house at lightning speed. The ride to the hospital felt unending. Emily couldn't help but wonder what kind of man she had gotten married to. Who wants to kill him? What would happen if Alexander lost his life? These thoughts ran through Emily's mind strongly.

Finally, they pulled up outside the emergency entrance. Emily's heart was beating out of her chest—not that she had feelings for Alexander, but she knew the pressure that was going to fall upon her by the masses when they discovered the incident.

Emily and Michael walked through the halls of the hasty hospital. The sound of beeping machines enveloped their ears as they made their way to Alexander's VIP room.

Emily's heart froze as she saw him lying in the hospital bed, surrounded by beeping machines and wires.

"Sir Michael Page, it's a pleasure to meet you," the doctor said to Michael, giving him a handshake.

"And Mrs. Roberts, it's an honor." Emily wondered how the doctor knew she was Alexander's wife, and she remembered that she was probably the most popular bride in the whole of New York.

"So, doctor, how's my cousin doing?" Michael asked.

"I'm afraid Mr. Alexander is in a coma, and his chances of making it are very slim. He might have been dead if he hadn't rushed here on time. We promise to do our very best to revive Mr. Alexander, sir."

Emily sat down slowly by Alexander's bedside, the magnitude of the situation weighing on her. Emily was silent, trying to process the news. Michael looked at her, his expression sympathetic, as she struggled with her emotions. Not knowing what to do or how to feel.

Emily sat there, lost in thought, when a man escorted by a policeman walked in, which caused Emily to suspect he was the detective who had investigated Alexander's accident, causing her to snap to attention.

"Are you the detective? What happened? Who did this to him?" Emily asked relentlessly.

"Emily, calm down. Everything is going to be fine," Michael whispered to her, staring into her eyes.

"Mrs. Roberts, Mr. Page, nice to meet you. I'm Detective Con."

"Nice to meet you, detective. You said the accident appeared to be deliberate in an attempt to kill Alexander." Michael questioned.

"Yes, apparently, from the information we gathered, his car was hit by a truck, and the driver eluded the scene immediately. We found out the truck was carrying a full load of cow dung to be shipped to farm houses, and in that whole region, there were no farm houses. So it was never headed to a farmhouse."

"I see…" Michael responded, placing his hand on his chin.

"Not only that; we found this note close to the driver's seat," Detective Con said, bringing out a small piece of paper from his pocket.

Michael took hold of the piece of paper and read out, "Broadway, 13:15."

"So you're saying whoever tried to kill Alexander knew where his destination was and the time he would get there?" Emily said as her eyes grew wide in dismay.

"Yes, Mrs. Roberts." Detective Con replied.

"But who would try to kill him?" Emily asked.

"We wouldn't know; Alexander happens to have a lot of enemies," Alexander said, shifting his attention to Emily.

"If anything comes up, I'll let you know."

"Please do. Thank you, detective," Michael said, as Detective Con excited the room.

Emily sat back nervously, her heart pounding. She had been married to Alexander for only two days, and she has experienced so much tragedy and mystery.

"What's wrong?" Michael asked, noticing Emily's sudden expression.

"What's wrong? I've been married to Alexander for not up to 48 hours, and someone attempts to take his life? What if I'm next? What if they try to kill me too?" Emily spat, her voice trembling.

"Hey, no one is going to kill you. I'll stay at the house till Alexander recovers," Michael said in a gentle voice.

"Like you can handle an average-muscled robber," Emily jokingly said.

"Whaaaaaat?" Michael said it in a high, stretched tone as they both laughed.

A man in a black suit with a briefcase walked in, causing a brief silence.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Emily, Sir Michael. I'm Alexander's business manager. I came here as fast as I could. The doctor informed me that Alexander was in a coma."

"May I please speak to Mrs. Roberts in private, Sir Michael?"

"Yeah, sure," Michael said as he left the room swiftly.

"Mrs. Roberts—"

"Please call me Emily," Emily said in frustration at being repeatedly called Mrs. Roberts.

"Okay… Miss Emily, I'm sure you are aware that you are Sir Alexander's business partner, and now that he is not in a very good state, you are in charge of all his business activities.

"What businesses? What are you talking about?" Emily asked, confusion evident in her expression.

"What I'm simply saying, Miss Emily, is that Sir Alexander's business is now in your hands, and you are to take responsibility for all its affairs."

"But I don't know anything about his businesses."

"I'm sorry, Miss Emily, but the whole of AR Technologies is now in your hands."

Confusion etched on Emily's face as she gripped onto her forehead.

"Michael is his cousin, and he knows way more than I do about Alexander's businesses, so he should be the one to take charge or something."

"You were chosen as Alexander's business partner and acting CEO if anything was to happen to him."

"Yeah, those are his father's wishes, but now things are different; I don't think I should be the one to take charge of his business activities."

"His father's wishes? I'm not sure what you're talking about, but Alexander specifically chose you to be his business partner, ma'am."

"What? How much does Alexander know about me that he entrusts all his wealth to me just like that?"

"Honestly, I didn't want to say this, but I believe Sir Alexander had deeper intentions for marrying you. Alexander has always been a schemer."

Emily sat there, her heart racing with mixed feelings of confusion, frustration, and curiosity. How could Alexander entrust her with so much when they haven't even had a normal conversation? But she knew one thing for sure: This was only the beginning of her life as the wife of Alexander Roberts.
