I smirked at his empty words. I’d spent so long repeating the exact phrases to myself as I lay in bed crying about leaving my family behind. They echoed while I ran from state to state. His voice haunted me for so long that I didn’t think it was feasible to hear my own voice in my head again. He’d been my subconscious and my tormenter. But I continued to face Princeton, waiting for the urge to disappear to strike me.

 

But it never came. I was genuinely unafraid.

 

I raised my weapon towards him, lightning illuminating the sky as he stood there, panting from giving his long-winded speech.

 

“Drop the gun, Princeton. Face it. It’s over. I’m not running from you ever again,” I called over the storm.
