The procession was led by a cleric wearing the papal tiara, followed by the other bishops and cardinals, with the Pope seated on a throne, carried by several strong men at the rear. The people cheered the name of the new Pope and called for Heaven's mercy through the intercession of its new Vicar.
Some knelt and kissed the ground over which the Pope's shadow passed, while others joyfully acclaimed the name of the Lord. The cardinals were dressed in festive robes, adorned with all the insignia of their rank. Before reaching the Lateran Basilica, the Pope rose from his throne and entered the basilica on foot.
An indescribable solemnity filled the Lateran Basilica as the Pope entered and gazed at those who had come from all corners of the Papal States. Nobles from Romagna, Milan, and even from Spain, the Pope's homeland, were present at this celebration where Pope Alexander was to be crowned.
