Chapter 40

Then, there in the middle of the aisle separating the two rows of stalls lay Black Francis. He was unconscious and could therefore not be lead to safety by Kiva. When Felix saw his tiny bird chest rising and falling, he knew he couldn’t leave him to die. Taking a deep breath, he reached out and grabbed Black Francis by his huge and terrifying taloned feet. “Fucking gross.” He held the rooster to his chest and duck-walked out of the barn before placing him on the ground a safe distance from the blaze. He turned back to the barn. He had only one more stall to go.

“Felix, no!” Ronan was hobbling out the side door of the house as fast as he could. “Stay back! The fire brigade’s on the way!”

Felix looked to Ronan, then to the barn. Kiva was standing in the doorway. She knew their job was not finished. “Only one more!” he yelled to Ronan before running back into the steadily burning barn.
