Chapter 22

“I know I already said it, but it really is so weird to be serving you at a table,” she says with a wide grin.

I smile back and pick up the slip of paper. “Weird, perhaps, but always a pleasure. Have I mentioned that you look beautiful in pink?”

Ann looks at Jimmy and smirks. “Real charmer, isn’t he?”

Jimmy laughs and looks down at the table. “I guess so.”

“You guess so?” She puts a hand on her hip and winks at me. “Well, now just look at that blush. If I didn’t know better, I’d think this young man has an eye for you, Eric. And wouldn’t that just be my luck, hmm? Best catch in the place and I go and lose him to the other side.”

Jimmy’s eyes widen and he snaps a glance at me, and then at Ann. “I…well…Eric…is…”

“She knows,” I say. “She’s teasing you.”

He waits until Ann walks away—far too amused with herself, nonetheless—and blows a long breath. “I wasn’t sure for a second there. I thought maybe you were, you know, quiet about it.”
