Chapter 65

The firing stops, and Jenkins jerks up and starts returning fire.

Evan feels a burning sting in his arm and looks down to see that his shirt has been ripped open, and a bullet grazed his arm at some point. It hurts like hell and is bleeding heavily, but it’s not fatal, so Evan ignores it for now.

Then, abruptly, everything goes quiet. Jenkins reaches into his damaged car and pulls out his radio, calling the station.

The sirens come quickly, and there’s chaos, police cars, ambulances, crime scene people for the second time that day, but this time he’s not in his apartment. He’s on the side of a road that they have to close off.

Evan assures them that he’s not hurt badly, but he gets loaded into an ambulance. The only reason he doesn’t argue is because it means he’ll be taken to the hospital, where Rene is. When he gets there, he asks about Rene, and they tell him he’s recovering from surgery. They won’t let him see Rene till he gets his arm stitched up.
