Chapter 60
“Did he ever give you anything when you were dating?” Rene asks.
“No, nothing important. Aftershave, opera tickets, meals out. But nothing really valuable. Nothing someone would want to steal.” Evan sighs.
“You haven’t seen him in years, right?” Sue asks.
“Not since the day I found out he was married. He gave me the ‘he was only married for the sake of the kids’ story. But even if that were true, it wasn’t something I was going to get involved in, not more than I already had been.” Evan shakes his head.
As they sit there talking, Rene feels warmth against his leg, and then something nudging him, and he looks down and notices Evan’s cat has moved to press against Rene’s leg. Rene’s never really had a pet, but he knows a thing or two about petting, so he starts petting the cat until he purrs.
