“I’ll be gentle with the news. She’ll be upset you were attacked, but she’ll understand what you had to do,” Damon says firmly, and then he turns to Evan.

“Thank you for all of your help, Dr. Kidd. I’m sure you’re looking forward to getting home. Rene can drive you to the airport in the morning. I’m sure you need to rest after all this, Rene, but just think: you’ll have your home to yourself again.” Damon sounds polite enough, but it’s clear to Rene that he’s ordering Evan out of town.

“Of course. My work will be needing me,” Evan says evenly, but Rene’s sure he sees something in Evan’s gaze. He doesn’t look happy. Rene knows he doesn’t feel happy himself, but Damon’s words give him an idea.

“I’d like to take a break while I’m at it. Everyone in town will be gossiping about me after this, and you know how I hate attention. So I’ll pack a bag and take off for a week or so,” Rene suggests.
