“Damn it,” Evan curses, startling Rene out of staring at the oh-so-slowly-moving clock.

“What?” Rene asks, looking around. Not seeing anyone else, he moves closer. He’s given himself a rule: when other people are around, Rene keeps at least five steps between him and Evan, so he can’t mess up and reach out and touch Evan.

“This sample. It looks so close to the toxin we’ve identified as being in the children’s blood. I thought it was a match, but it’s not.” Evan sounds pissed off. Rene takes another look around. They’re still alone, so he puts a hand on Evan’s shoulder.

“If it’s close, could it be a similar? What was it close to?” Rene asks.
