Chapter 40

“I get that. Both are you being hated over something you can’t help. But I can’t help how I feel about humans. I have my reasons,” Rene says softly.

“Will you ever tell me?” Evan asks. He doesn’t want to push, but he wants to know. He wants to understand this complicated man.

“Honestly? I don’t know. It’s not something I talk about.” Rene sighs, then he looks over at Evan, at his chest.

“Will you ever tell me how you got that scar? You’re not the fighting kind,” Rene asks softly.

“Maybe I’ll tell you. It’s not something I like talking about.” Evan swears he feels a twinge in his chest just thinking about that night. He refuses to open the box he keeps those thoughts in.

“Seems we both have things we’d rather not talk about.” Rene looks away from Evan, and Evan hates that there’s this awkwardness between them when things have been so good all day. Things change between them so quickly. One minute they’re falling into bed, and the next Rene doesn’t even want to look at him.
