Chapter 30

“You don’t have to make anything up to me. I get angry all the time. You don’t need to sleep with me to keep me in a good mood.” Rene had loved his father, but the man had a temper, worse than Rene’s even now. When he’d gotten mad, Rene’s mother had tried to calm him down, always blaming herself, thinking his behavior was something she could fix. Rene never wants to make someone feel like that.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t even mean it like that. I was just joking. You and I, we have sex because we have chemistry, not because I feel like I have to,” Evan says softly, clearly aware that he’s hit a sore spot.

“I don’t want to get into it now, but promise me you’ll only ever have sex with me because you want to,” Rene says firmly.

“I promise, and that’s the only reason I have. I didn’t do it so you’d like me. I got past trying that years ago. Sex doesn’t make people like you better.” Evan bites his lip, and Rene remembers Evan’s comment about not dating or sleeping with assholes.
