Chapter 21: Stranger than fiction

“Stop the car!” I call out in an urgent tone.
The car comes to an instant halt, jarring us from our seat at the sudden impact. The screeching of breaks and burned rubber permeate the air.
“What the hell, Jules?” Rowan asks. “Are you alright? What’s wrong?”
My body instantly changes as it prepares to fight. I can feel the rush of power coursing through my body and my eyes glowing. “Something is coming,” I mutter gruffly. “I can feel it.”
Rowan searches the darkened road leading to the clinic, then focuses his eyes on the forested area on the other side of the road.
“All I hear is the sounds of cicadas and the rustling wind. Are you sure?”
I nod my head and open the door as the feeling intensifies. “It’s getting closer.”
