Waking Up and Forgetting

One faithful day, Damien wakes up, surrounded by darkness. He slowly sits up realizing he's in a dark hospital room. He presses a button on the side and a few moments later a nurse comes running in. She seems to be a young female, from what Damien can see she has black hair and a petite body.

She comes running up to Damien bedside, "Oh my! You're awake!" While examining Damien she stops and goes over to a clipboard and then says, "I'm going to get the doctor, wait a few moments." She leaves the room.

Damien looks puzzled. He tries to move around in the bed, but his muscles scream in pain and his head starts throbbing.

A few moments later the nurse comes back with a doctor behind her.

She points toward Damien, "see I told you, he's awake." as the doctor rushes over to the bedside. "Yes, yes." The doctor waves over to the nurse, "come here." Then he looks over at Damien.

The doctor looks to be a middle-aged man with a short grey beard and grey hair. He starts talking to Damien, "now, I want to check a few things with you, young man. First and foremost, can you tell me your name?"

Damien looks at the man slightly puzzled before answering, "W-well... my my name is Damien..." he says with a raspy voice.

The doctor nods, "good. Nurse, can you bring some water for this young man." With those few words Damien's eyes lit up.

The nurse grabs a small cup and fills it in the little sink in the back. She hands the cup over to Damien and he takes small sips of the water.

"Easy now, we know your thirsty but we most continue with the questions." The doctor motions Damien to put the cup down. He puts the cup to the side and looks at the doctor, ready to answer anything.

The doctor clears his throat and begins again, "Now, Damien, how are you feeling right now?"

Damien shakes his head, "A a little sore just about everywhere, and a pounding headache."

The doctor nods and looks over to the nurse, "Alright, we will get you some painkillers for your headache, and see if we can schedule you some physical therapy with our specialist. Now, do you remember what happened to you?"

Damien shakes his head, "Not really..."

The doctor slightly nods, "That's to be expected, you experienced a class 4 burn out. Which quite frankly is the highest burnout you can experience. All the magic power in your body got used up."

Shocked by the news Damien looks at the doctor, "Does th-that mean I I don't have my magical powers an-anymore?"

The doctor shakes his head, "You still have some, but our bodies need magic to survive in this world, and since you forced out everything, you've become somewhat crippled. The soreness is from forcing out more power than you could handle, your muscles practically tore themselves apart. Class 4 burn out is what this all means."

Damien lowers his head as he lets the news sink in slowly. A few moments later he looks up at the doctor.

Damien grabs the doctor's sleeve gripping it, "H-how long have I I been out?"

The doctor sighs, "Hah, well you've been out for about 12 weeks."

The news shocks Damien, as he stares blankly at the doctor, unable to utter a single word.

The doctor pats his hand, "I know it's shocking, but your body needs to recover the spent magic and the brain shuts everything off to allow that to happen. You're quite lucky to have such a strong will, be proud of that."

Damien forces a smile, "Th-thank you."

The doctor nods, "Well, we will continue to monitor you and help you recover from this, mister Damien. I'm glad you're awake. I am truly astonished that you've woken up this early. Usually, class 4 patients are comatose for several months, but you've returned to us quickly. I'm sure you'll be out of here soon." The doctor smiles as he heads toward the exit.

The nurse comes over and refills Damien's water and gives him some sleeping pills, "Now these are to help you sleep, as it's the best way to recover. Tomorrow more will be explained to you but right now rest is the best thing for you."

Damien nods and takes a drink while swallowing the pills. A few moments later he falls asleep.

The next morning Damien wakes up as the nurse is changing his IV bag.

He looks up toward the nurse, "Go-good morning." He says with a smile.

She looks down at Damien, "well, good morning to you too!" She says with a big smile. "Now let me just change this for you and I'll get you some breakfast." The nurse finishes changing the IV bag and heads out to get some breakfast for Damien.

She returns with some applesauce, or what looks to be applesauce and mashed up fruits.

She places the plate down on a little table that goes over Damien's bed. She begins feeding him. "Hope you don't mind, your still somewhat weak." She says with a bright smile and continues feeding him.

Damien enjoys the pampering.

She finishes feeding him and collects the dishes. She starts heading toward the door, but turns around, "we have a busy schedule today, Damien. You'll be meeting your physical therapist today."

Damien nods, "So-sounds good." She smiles and leaves the room.

Damien looks around the room, looking at his arms and hands he sees new scars, he looks weak, frail even. His skin is bleach white, and everything hurts. The lightning bolt scar on his right arm is cracked all over from his skin breaking.

Soon after the nurse returns, "Alright Damien, we have a few minutes, any questions you want to ask?"

He looks up at the nurse, and utters a few words, "Wh-what hap-happened to me..."

The nurse let out a heavy sigh, "When you were fighting in the tournament, you gotten severely injured. You pushed past what your body could handle. Your emotions pushed you to your very limit and beyond."

Damien looks down at his hands, "Wh-why?"

The nurse walks up to him and grabs his hands, "I don't know the full details, maybe when your friends come visit, they will tell you. A lot has happened since you've been under, but once you're back on your feet you'll be able to help out!" The nurse says with a cheer.

Damien smiles at her as he's grateful that she's so caring.

The nurse pulls up a wheelchair and helps Damien out of his bed, "Now let's go!"

Damien and the nurse leave the room.
