Chapter 39

"This is getting ridiculous." April says as I walk into the locker room with my gift basket full of pastries. For the last month all of the residents have been interviewing with different hospitals for a fellowship position, I wasn't stressed at all because every hospital I've interviewed with has loved me so far and even been sending me gifts to try to convince me to join there program.

"Cleveland Clinic. Since when does Cleveland Clinic bribe residents to come work with them?" Jackson asks while reading over the card they sent also.

"Oh, they don't, unless you're extraordinary like me." I smile before Alex walks by grabbing a cookie out of the gift basket. "Hey." I say slapping him on the arm.

"Cookies stale." He says.

"Aw, Alex is it hard for you? Having to beg for interviews while some us, meaning me, just sit back and get wooed." I say slapping Jackson on the hand as he helps himself to my food.

"No one is begging." Alex frowns.

"Oh, maybe you should. Maybe that way you'd actually get an interview." April says making me laugh

"I love mean Kepner." Cristina smiles.

"I got an interview." Alex says.

"Oh really, where?"

"At places." Alex says.

"Uh-huh." April replies.

"Whatever. Look this sucks we got boards in a couple of weeks and now they want us to go on freaking job interviews. There's only so much crap a guy can have thrown at him before he snaps." Alex complains.

"There's a trauma coming in on the roof. Kepner, Karev come with me." Hunt says.

"I gotta leave for my northwestern interview in an hour, I told you yesterday." April says.

"Um Avery." Hunt says calling on Jackson.

"Sloan's got me all day, sorry." Jackson apologizes.

"I'm free." I volunteer.

"Great, thank you." Owen says signaling for me to follow him before running to the roof with him and Alex where the air ambulance with the patient is waiting.

"Female hiker found at the bottom of a ravine. Positive L.O.C with obvious head and abdominal trauma, hypothermia, frostbite, you name it." The EMT tells us as we push the gurney into the elevator.

"Airway looks clear." Alex says.

"Weakened pulse." Owen says shining a light in her eyes to check her pupils as she begins to wake up.

"I'm Dr. Garcia, you're in the hospital. Can you tell us your name?" I ask before she starts hyperventilating. "Okay, okay try to calm down for me."

"Let's go, let's go, out of the way." Owen says as we push the gurney out of the elevator and take the patient to CT.

"Okay, I'm going to be right on the other side of that glass, you just try to stay calm." I say beginning to walk away before the patient grabs my arm stopping me and I notice what looks like rope burns and old scars.

"You weren't hiking out there, were you?" I ask and she shakes her head no.

"What's the hold up, Garcia?" Owen asks from the other side of the glass.

"I'm staying in, get me an apron." I say.

"Okay, here you go." A nurse says getting me the apron.

"Okay, I'm gonna stay with you. I'm not leaving, I'll be right here the whole time" I reassure the patient before we run the CT scans. After getting the scans we see old fractures that weren't treated along with the new injuries and take her to the OR.

"She was abused it's all over the X-Ray's." Alex says

"Then we need to call the police." I say.

"Just stay calm. We don't know anything for sure until she talks." Owen says.

"Hunt, she has a temporal bone fracture. I'm gonna have to do a middle fossa approach." Derek says.

"Okay, there's an aneurysm in her celiac artery. I'll need to put a graft in." Bailey says.

"She's ready to be put under Chief." The anesthesiologist says.

"Wait." I say before walking over to the patient. "You were running from someone, right? Is that how you fell? No ones going to hurt you, we just need to know your name."

"He, he called me Susan but I, I think it's Holly." She stutters. We put her under and Owen and I leave the OR to contact the cops and wait for them to arrive. They get here and tell us to check for birth mark on her arm. We go to the OR to check and sure enough we find it. Meaning that the girl is Holly Wheeler. She was kidnapped years ago when she was only 6. I notify the cops before returning the OR and joining surgery again, after finishing we take Holly to recovery.

"Can you wiggle your toes?" Derek asks as he examines Holly after she wakes up and she manages to wiggle them a little. "Painful?" He asks and she nods her head yes. "Yeah, you hit your head pretty hard when you fell, but you're doing great okay." Derek smiles.

"Holly, I'm Dr. Flincher. I'm a therapist who works for the hospital. Is it okay if the police ask you a few questions, only if you're up to it." The therapist asks Holly and she looks over to me to see what I say. I nod my head yes, so she agrees to speak to them and we signal for the cops to come in.

"Do you know his name Holly, the man that was keeping you?" The cop asks.

"It's okay." I tell her as she looks over at me.

"Joseph, Joseph Ingles." Holly says.

"That's great, really helpful. Now can you tell us anything about where you were living? Was it a house, an apartment?"

"It was a house, one story. It has a basement." Holly says.

"Do you know if there were any roads nearby? Could you hear cars?" He asks.

"He didn't let me go outside?" She says fighting back tears.

"Holly, we can stop if you need to." The therapist says and Holly looks at me nodding her head yes.

"We should take a break." I tell them. I stay with Holly for a little while before joining everyone else outside of her room.

"What's going on?" I ask.

"Dr. Fincher thinks that it's best that you stay with Holly, at least until her parents arrive." Owen says.

"I have no psych training." I say.

"Holly spent the last 12 Years with little to no control over anything in her life. Our job is to break that pattern by letting her know she and she alone is in control. Whatever she wants, she gets. Including you, we'll have to work together on this." Dr. Fincher says.

"Okay." I agree.

"Thank you. If you'll excuse me the family's waiting for my call." Dr Fincher says before walking away. I walk back into Holly's room and stay with her, until the parents arrive. Holly is still a little standoffish since she isnt used to them. Since she's comfortable with me they give me a photo album with pictures from when she was younger to show her to see if it brings back any memories.

"This is I think your first day of school, looks like that's where the bunny came from. So today Dr. Torres will be realigning your arm, you'll have a lot more mobility in your elbow." I say.
