Underworld Intern

This is basically a tale of Hades and Persephone, but not quite like you know it. The love that blossomed between Hades and Persephone was never a mere coincidence like Greek mythology suggests, there are ancient truths that were buried, lies that were praised, and connections that were severed, never again to see the light of day… Until now. Persephone, a sheltered, home schooled sweet little girl finally gets the chance to see the world beyond her mother’s reach and enrolls in the most prestigious university in all the three realms. Will she fulfill her mother’s wishes of working hard and graduating collage so she can take over the business? Or will her encounter with the king of the underworld completely throw her off track? ***** “Lord Hades! Lord Hades!” “How many times have I told you not to scream in my office Thanatos?” Thanatos stopped in front of the large black table and slipped a piece of paper across to the dark haired man who was smoking a cigar at the other end of it. “You need to see this.” Hades picked up the paper and trailed his deep crimson eyes over each line, his brows knitting more and more as he read. “Is this a some kind of fluke?” “I followed it up sir,” Thanatos responded. His voice indicated both excitement and nervousness, how could he not be? This had never happened before in the history of the underworld. “It’s not a fluke sir, someone actually applied to intern in the underworld.” “Persephone….” Hades mumbled to himself as she gazed at the picture attached to the application letter. “What are you up to little dove?”

Chapter 12 : Seventeen hundred?

After Zeus had successfully distracted Melia and sneaked away while she was telling the story of her 'glorious life', he hurried back to the VIP section only to find his brother Poseidon digging a hole in the floor with his pacing, while beads of sweat littered his forehead.

"Poseidon? You okay there buddy?" Zeus walked to the refreshments table to pour himself another cup of champagne, "you don't have to be so nervous anymore, I assure you that Melia will be pacified for the next hour or so, you know how that woman gets when she's blabbing about herself."

The sudden grab from Poseidon made Zeus jump, almost spilling his champagne on his clothes, "hey what's the big idea startling me like that?! Do you have any idea how much drachma I spent on this jacket? And you almost made me ruin it."

"Forget your snazzy jacket!" Poseidon yelled in a panic, "Zeus, we have a very big problem."

"What's going on? Did we run out of champagne?"

The sea god sighed before handing his phone to his brother, "forget the alcohol for a second. Look, I found a bit of information about the hot girl Hades is with."

Zeus took the phone before nodding approvingly at his detective brother, "nice Poseidon, very nice."

"No.. not nice, check her personal details, the fourth line under her residence…"

Zeus trailed his eyes to the line Poseidon was talking about, and he saw it, his eyes went wide in both shock and terror, "oh my gods… Poseidon, we need to stop Hades!"

The two gods zapped out of the party hall into the hallway that was leading to the dining area.

"Dear Gaia I hope they haven't done anything.." Zeus mumbled as they inched closer to the closed doors of the hall. "We could be looking at major lawsuits, we'll be ruined."

When they reached the door, both the two gods' eyes circled at the sounds that were coming from inside.

"Do you like it?" Hades' voice muttered from the other side of the door.

"I love it, it's a little much but it's so yummy I can't get enough," Persephone's voice responded.

"Well you can take as much as you like, but don't be so haste I wouldn't want you to choke…"

Suddenly the doors to the dinning hall burst open and a perspiring pair of gods frantically searched the room, and spotted Persephone and Hades sitting at a table in a corner.

"Hades stop! What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Zeus yelled.

Hades furrowed his brows in confusion, "we're eating, what does it look like?"

"Eating what?!" Poseidon screamed.

The blue god flashed the pack of food to his brothers, "Kronos fried chicken, you know I like their hot wings."

Zeus and Poseidon threw their gaze at Persephone who had paused her chewing and was staring at them questioningly.

"So you guys weren't touching peepees?"

Hade immediately went into a coughing fit after chocking on his wing, he flashed from his seat to where his brothers were standing and gave Persephone an apologetic smile. "Excuse me while I have a word with my brothers outside."

The three gods vanished and materialized down the empty hallway.

"What the Underworld is wrong with you two?! Why would you embarrass me like that in front of that young lady?!"

"That's exactly it," Poseidon explained, "she's not a young lady." The god pulled out his phone and gave it to Hades who scrolled through it angrily until his scowl melted into a face of dread.

"This has to be some sort of mistake right? This can't be accurate."

Zeus pat Hades' shoulder and nodded his head, "it's true Hades, Persephone is a child, she's seventeen."

"Seventeen hundred?…."

"No Hades!" Poseidon replied, "seventeen as in she was born seventeen years ago."

Hades cupped his forehead and took a step back, "what…" seventeen?! Good gods, she wasn't even a fifth of his age, she was a literal infant! "But why is she at this party?!"

"You know how college students are," Zeus explained, "we were the same way when we were in college remember? Sneaking off to parties and taking to older women."

"That last part was mostly you Zeus…"

Hades could feel the ground beneath him start to spin. Why hadn't he been able to see it before, all the signs were there. Her naive ways, her innocent demeanor, her childlike wonder… it was because she was a child! And he had been making small talk with her! If anything more had happened he would have been swimming in lawsuits.

"Well, the good thing is you didn't rail her," Zeus spoke as he walked back to the party, "thank your lucky stars Hades!"

A gentle hand rubbed Hades' back pulling him out of his dreadful trace, "Hey, are you okay there buddy?" Poseidon asked his brother, Hades' skin was looking even paler than usual.

Hades batted his lashes and forced a smile, "yes I believe I'm alright, like Zeus said, luckily nothing inappropriate happened."

"Hey I know you had your hopes up for this one, but don't be too hard on yourself, there plenty of fish in the sea." Poseidon encouraged his brother. "There's someone out there for you. It may not be her but there is someone, don't lose hope."

Hades scoffed, "yes of course. Well, I should probably escort the young lady.. umm the young girl, back to her friends before they start to worry."

"Sure," Poseidon gave his brother one last comforting back rub before heading back to the party hall.

With a heavy stride, Hades made his way back into the dining hall and found Persephone sitting with a box of chicken wings on her lap.

"Hey you're back, I hope nothing went wrong between you and your brothers.."

Hades made his way to the table without saying anything, what could he possibly say, he had practically flirted with a minor. Had he stopped so low?

"I left you some wings," Persephone continued and handed Hades the box she was holding. "I ate most of them but there's still enough in there for you."

Hades took the box and immediately looked down at the young goddess skeptically.

"Okay I lied, i only left two," she mumbled sheepishly, "I'm sorry I couldn't help myself they were so good."

The man scoffed, Persephone was really effortlessly adorab- wait a minute what the hell was he thinking?! No! No! She's a child!

"Umm Persephone, since you've had your fill. I should probably return you to your friends, we don't want them worrying about you."

Persephone knitted her brows together before nodding, she didn't remember telling Hades her name, where him and his brothers talking about her earlier? Did they say something to him that was suddenly making Hades act so closed up again? Oh gods, did they tell him she was some unrefined girl raised on a farm?!

"After you," Hades spoke as he held the door open for her.

Back in the party hall, Tekos was asking people if they had seen Persephone anywhere while Eris was crying her eyes out on the sofa, mostly due to the alcohol she had taken.

"Oh gods I shouldn't have left her alone," Eris wailed, "she was so young with a bright future ahead of her, and now she's gone!"

"Eris..?"

The goth goddess opened her eyes and saw Persephone standing over her. "Persie! Oh my gods you're alright, I was so worried!" She jumped to her feet and hugged her roommate tightly before cupping her cheeks in her palms, "are you hurt?"

"No I'm alright.." Persephone responded with a chuckle, "have you been crying?"

"Shut up I thought you were kidnapped okay. Tekos! I found her!"

The blue eyed satyr rushed to Persephone and hugged her, a few seconds later upon realizing what had had done, he abruptly let her go and stepped back, his face burning red. "I'm so sorry Persephone. I was worried about you, are you okay?"

"If you're going to bring your friend to a party I suggest you don't leave her alone, it's dangerous for a young girl like her in places like this," Hades scolded Eris and Tekos

"We're sorry sir, it won't happen again," the two responded in unison.

"Alright then, you kids have a good night."

Persephone turned and watched Hades walk to where his brothers were sitting. "Young girl?"

"Come on Persie let's head home," Eris spoke as she dragged her friend away, "I'm all partied out."

"Oh okay…" Persephone followed her friend to the exit but before leaving she took one last look at Hades.

Hades who had poured himself a cup of straight vodka glanced at the door and saw Persephone leave, he felt ashamed for ever having considered liking her. She was far too young for him.

Ironic how Poseidon said “there’s plenty of fish in the sea” pppffffttt.. okay okay I’ll stop
