Chapter 2: To See You Again
Time slowly passed, tomorrow is the scheduled date for the project's first launch. In the past few months we conducted a series of experiment regarding the project, the result turns out to be pretty convincing.
I don't know why, but I also think that the project will flop, the percentage of it being successful is nowhere 30%, but still, I'm hanging into it since it is the only plausible way to save her.
"You're fucking nervous aren't ya?"
"Geez Glady, can't you stop cursing everytime that you're talking?" I replied.
"Haha, that's it! You're really nervous!"
"Of course I am, we don't even know if the project will be successful, who knows? What will you do if I got whipflashed on that thing?"
"Calm down, the drive may be faster than the speed of light but it is only due to the contraction of space. You'll be alright."
"It is my goddamn project, don't you think I know that?"
"Don't go" she replied with a serious voice.
I was shook.
Glady is my only friend here in the lab, hearing her say that she don't want me to go feels like the project will definitely fail.
"You're accusing me of being nervous while on the other hand, you're the nervous one" I replied sarcasticaly.
"I'll be back, don't worry"
"Make sure to bring her back" she replied with a smile.
Now, I get it. Glady also knows my other objective, and that is to save Maia.
After she said that, I decided to left the lab and go home for a while.
"Mom? Dad? Are you both here?"
"Yup, why? Is there something wrong?" my father replied.
Even though I already make a huge and stable salary, I still decided to stay with them. I guess that's what you get for living in a collective country.
"Nothing, I just booked a flight for you guys, don't you want to visit another country?" I replied.
"Seriously? What country?" my mom replied happily.
"What's the occassion? Why did you booked us tickets out of the blue?" my dad added.
"Nothing, you two are very busy these past few months, I figured that you two deserves at least a vacation somewhere" I replied.
They were pretty happy, that's good for now. The first trial of the project can be too devastating, they're not aware that I'll be the one who's undergoing the trial, I don't want them to get anxious.
"Tomorrow's the scheduled flight, 7am, I think you better arrange your things and also buy the necessary needs for the flight. Here's my card, use it to buy your things, you can also use it in another country, it has plenty of money."
"What an elegant man, haha" replied by my father.
"Take care on your flight mom, dad. Make sure to give me an update, okay? I already reserved hotels and resorts over there, someone will wait for your arrival tomorrow."
"I'm goin' to cook lunch, what do you two prefer?"
"It is up to you" my father replied.
After we ate our lunch, I tried to reach out for my twin sister, her name is Sarina.
She's the only sibiling of mine, we grew up really close to each other, I can also say that she is my second mother. She is already in a different country right now, practicing law.
*Riiing Riiing*
"It's been a while you dumbass, it's too rare for you to give me a call, you got dumped by a girl aren't yah?" she said.
"Who the hell told you that? No one dumped me, okay? I'm the one who's always rejecting girls." I replied.
"Stop, can't you become humble sometimes? Haha. You're too arrogant. With your looks, you're dumping girls? Hell no, you're dreamin'."
"Fuck that, we both know that I am right."
"So? Why the hell did you call in all of a sudden"
"You'll take care of mon and dad, promise me that"
"Haha, are you going to die or something? You sound preposterous, stop it or else I'll put it on record"
"Haha, it is so nice to hear your voice right now, thanks, Sarina"
"Wha-"
I hang up the phone after that.
I'm still skeptical wether I will go or not, but I always figured that her death is somehow my fault. That vacation is entirely my idea, thus the death of her is caused by me, I'm always pointing the blame to myself, now, it is the right time for me to correct my mistake.
It is final, I'm going to do it.
I took a rest early, since tomorrow is a big day.
The night passed so fast, I never though that it can be this fast. I failed to get a proper sleep due to the excitement and also because I'm nervous.
I also bid farewell to my parents, I also drove them to the airport. Neither did they know that there's a possibility that this is the last day that they'll see me.
"Are you nervous? Dr. Amiel?" said by Professor Reginald.
"Of course I am, I definitely am, am I a robot not to get nervous? Haha"
"Whatever happened, I'm prepared of the consequences" I added.
The whole trial or launch of the project is goin' to happen live, it is also going to be recorded, the whole world is watching right now.
This can be either a great milestone or just be added to another group of preposterous scientist who failed their studies.
As I'm about to enter the drive, I saw Glady waiting outside.
"Take care, dumbass"
I only smiled at her and nod. This can be my final day, yet she still tried to curse me, I'm glad.
"I'm going"
As I entered the drive, my hands started to get cold and shake, I'm nervous. I'm wearing a suit right now that will prevent me to gst whipflashed as soon as the drive started to travel.
"Checking the comms, are you ready Dr. Amiel? Is everything you need ready?" said by Dr. Reece.
"Yes, let's now proceed"
"We're now commencing, good luck, Dr. Amiel"
The drive started, by contracting the space in front and expanding the space in the back, there is a lot of information to process for sure, I'm starting to get dizzy and nauseated.
Suddenly, I heard an explosion at the back of the drive, the machine is starting to fail, the oxygen level is depleting.
Everything that's happening is expected by me. I have a lot of trust on my people, we got the theory right, but the ability to execute it is stiln far beyond our expectations. This is the end of me, at least I'm going to die trying, trying to save.
My eyes is beginning to feel heavy, I guess this is the end of me, I'm sorry.
