The Winged Guardian

When Leigh discovered the secret of the most popular guy in school, being an eyesore to other girls was not out of her expectation. But she certainly had never thought of angering a dragon, being burnt at stake, or making gods her enemy.

Rescue.

Another bang resoundedraucously but I got used to it now. The fire must have destroyed most of the warehouse. I only hoped that I could die from lack of oxygen rather than parts of the building falling down on me. It would hurt less that way.

And another bang. I could not move but I tried hard not to pass out. Three-fourth of the eyelids were drooping helplessly. With all the consciousness that was left of me, I stayed awake as long as the reaper allowed, hoping that I could somehow think of a way to help Dale and had one last glimpse of Dylan.

"Leigh!"

Oh, another blast.

"Leigh!"

--Huh? That's a very weird crashing sound.

"Leigh!!"

If I'm not wrong, that is my name.

"Leigh! Leigh!"

Who could it be?

"Leigh!!!"

The voice calling my name was louder and louder. So somebody was coming closer. Help me,…no help Dale please…

"Leigh!" The voice was right next to my ear. I remembered now, it was Dylan's. In the blurring trance, joy took over me and although unable to force a smile, I did cry. But tears vaporized as soon as they met the hot air. The demon held me, called my name over and over again. I could die in peace now.

I was about to fall into the deep abyss of nothingness when suddenly the gravity shifted and soon seemed to vanish. The air carried me out of the darkness into light. And it wasn't that hot and burning anymore. Cool fresh air poured into my lungs. Awareness slowly returned bit by bit.

And when all the nerves were fully connected with my body again, I heard a singing song drifting across my ears, soothing all the searing emotions inside. Feeling like a warm jelly wrapping around, I blinked a few times to make sure that I was really awaked before opening my eyes. It was just the face I wanted to see most, my demon.

Great delight cemented my mouth. Unable to take my gaze away, I could not describe how overjoyed I was. Tears outpoured as he called my name once again and squeezed me tight in his embrace.

"Leigh! I…I thought I'd lost you."

My heart jumped. Partly happy, partly also uncertain of his intention. Does he also like me? Or does he just think of me as his master? But this isn't time to think of something like this!

"Dy…Dylan."

The demon helped me up. He seemed weirdly pale in this orange light. "Come. We have to go. It's dangerous in here."

I followed my demon obediently. But something on the floor caught my eyes. It was Dale.

"Wait!" I pulled the demon back and knelt down beside Dale. He looked just like perfectly blue rare grilled meat. "Please, help him too."

Then, I realized, with mouth and eyes wide opened. It was the first time I requested Dylan. I had made a request and would have to pay back later. But I did not regret, I would give anything to help Dale.

Dylan smiled kindly. "Of course."

Dylan bent down, putting his hand slightly above Dale's belly and chanted a spell. So the singing song I heard was from him. The blue light started from his palm, spread all over Dale's body and the wounds were slowly healed. As the light faded away, Dale took a big gasp and choked before springing up to life again.

Dale glared at Dylan in an instant. "What the-?!" And went into a row of coughs because of the smoke surrounded.

I turned to my demon. "Can you get him out of here?" Oh, another request.

Dylan nodded panting exhaustedly. His breath rhythm seemed a bit strange. "But I have to get you out first."

"No." I refused bluntly. "I can go later. Please, please, help Dale first."

I pleaded casting a poor cute kitten eyes. Dylan couldn't resist very long. He grabbed Dale with one hand and shoot out to the top of the flame.

"Wait there. I'll be back!"

Even with Dale's shout, kicks and punches in the air, my demon did not let me wait long. He came back almost immediately after flew out.

"Wow, that was fast!"

An explosion from somewhere thundered the hall, interrupted the constant rumble of the fire waves. As I flinched, my eyes met the ceiling and saw that a huge piece of rock was falling down on me. I screamed as the size of the rock increase every second it came closer.

Dylan spread out his wings and covered me up with the onyx arms. He kept me underneath and took the hit. The demon pushed the rock away, carried me up and we took off out of this hell.

As soon as we were out, Dylan lowered his hands and we dropped down onto the ground. I rolled a couple of times but got up instantly and hurried to my demon. Dylan lay still. Beautiful dark wings shattered. The elegant face went a shade whiter. He was badly injured and could do nothing but moaning quietly.

"Dylan!" I cried.

"Dylan!" Somebody else said the exact same word and panic tone and rushed beside me seizing my demon away.

"Jessie!" I stared at the girl holding Dylan with surprise.
