Alice was lying on a hospital bed, looking very anxious.
There were sufficient evidence and witnesses to charge her with stealing. She was currently on bail, pending trial. There were police officers outside the door watching over her.
In other words, if Joanna refused to drop the case, Alice would go to jail for at least three years.
