The day went by smoothly after that and he took her home and made sure she got in safe before starting to walk back to the hotel. He had his bike at the station and didn't want to go back and get it, he would just walk back.
He had originally planned on going over to Raymond Street after work but due to the fact that he had left his bike behind, he couldn't walk that long distance.
All this while, many thoughts filled his mind.
After talking with Alexa, he felt as if his previous thoughts were correct:
Mr Lee had set him up on a blind date with his daughter…but this wasn't possible.
There had to be a reason why he wanted him to be close to his daughter and work for him temporarily.
So far, the only thing he was sure of was that Mr Lee had other plans for him. He was using him for something but he didn't know what.
His intuition told him it was dangerous but he let his curiosity rule him, mainly because of two reasons:
First, this might lead him to find more clues about the serial killer and second, he wanted to know why the man wanted him. He had a few guesses but all led to one thing…one person…and if what he thought was correct, then he was in for a treat….
He walked along the street enjoying the cool breeze that brushed against his skin, tonight was warm.
After walking a bit more, he felt someone was following him in the not so dark night.
Bryan slowed down his pace but didn't look back. His years of experience taught him never to look back carelessly in such situations.
Luckily, he was always prepared for combat. He took out his sun glasses and put it on; he put his hand into his pocket and touched the darts that were laced with chemicals that could make a person lose consciousness.
Even if it was the unfathomable and unpredictable 'exorcist' that was stalking him, he was convinced that he could put up a good fight and hold out till the police arrived. His style of fighting was simple; if it wasn't going in his favour, he would create a huge commotion that would attract attention.
Then again, considering that this silent killer was fast and quick with ghost-like attributes he could just finish him off before he could react. He doubted that his gun could help in this situation.
Walking a little bit further, he turned around sharply and threw a dart.
"Whoa!" the figure grabbed the dart in mid-air, "I never knew you were this cautious, but darts?"
"What do you think you're doing?" Bryan almost yelled as he tapped his sun glasses which had already lit up. It was Bernadette.
She threw the dart away and walked up to him, "I saw you walking by alone and I thought I should give you a scare. Too bad you discovered me, but next time; use something with more offensive power."
How could he forget? She's the only one who loved walking and enjoyed walking alone at night…
"Aren't you afraid of the killer?"
"The killer knows who he messes with. If he comes for me," she kicked the air, "I'll just do that to him."
Bryan unknowingly broke into a smile; she was always so comical and lively and knew how to make someone laugh.
Be it her words or body movements or the way she ate, she always added a bit of flair to it.
"How did your day go?" he asked after they walked for a while. She had joined him for the bodyguard job and was probably with Mr Lee or his son.
"Boring," she grabbed her short hair in frustration, "Mr Lee is such a jerk!"
"You were with him?"
"He doesn't speak much and was always in his office leaving me to run errands and make coffee all day, and that's not the worst part."
Bryan laughed, "What did you expect? For him to call you in and chat all day?"
"Something like that," she replied indifferently, "Luckily, Jason will take my place tomorrow."
Bryan sighed, the others will take turns but he was the only one who had to work all day and protect Alexa.
"Talking about Jason, I noticed he looks a bit different these days." He brought up another topic.
"Personal issues. His girlfriend broke up with him." She replied without much thought.
"That's mean," he crunched up his face, "did he tell you this?"
"A girl knows what a girl needs to know."
They walked together in silence. Occasionally their shoulders would bump clumsily. Bryan had wanted to hold her hand but he managed to control his actions. He wasn't thinking straight, not when he was around her.
"Can you wait here for me?" Bryan asked, "I need to get something over there."
He pointed at a 24-hour shop.
Bernadette nodded, "It's fine."
He jogged his way towards the shop.
Not long after he left, some few men walked by and when they noticed her standing alone, they went over.
"Hey pretty, you're alone?" one of the men asked.
"Bug off!" she turned her body and walked away a bit.
"An interesting one we have here," the other one commented, "but we can totally rock your world."
The other three men snickered.
"Scram or I'll rock your world!"
They exploded with laughter. What could she probably do? She was just a girl who was alone on the street, besides, pretty girls are always weak.
The men didn't listen and kept hanging around her. Bernadette was disgusted and prepared to fight back but stopped when she heard Bryan shout:
"The lady said bug off."
The men turned and faced him.
"You're her boyfriend or what?" the bulkier man shot a look at him, "you better go home kid, or I'll feed your lean body to the ravens!"
Kid? Bryan looked at his body again. Although he wasn't muscular but couldn't they at least show him some respect?
"That's it!"
Bryan jumped at the bulkier man and punched him several times till he fell to the ground.
Maybe it was because the others didn't see him as a threat; hence, they failed to react when they saw Bryan punch their companion.
Bryan delivered a strong kick to the groin of the next opponent and he flew back a distance.
The other two came at him at once but he wasn't afraid. He grabbed the other one and stunned him with his Taser while throwing a dart at the next one.
He stood over the men and looked down at them domineeringly.
"Next time a lady says scram," he kicked the bulkier man again, "You scram!"
"And next time a 'kid' says get lost," he delivered another kick to the bulkier man, "you get lost."
"Wow, you totally amazed me today."
Bryan looked at Bernadette who was beaming and shook his head, "does this always happen when you walk alone at night?"
Bernadette shook her head and pouted, "You stole all the fun, I wanted to beat them up!"
"I just thought I could be your knight in shining armour." He shrugged and moved aside, "What should we do with them?"
"Beat them up some more."
Bryan was slack-jawed; this wasn't the typical "damsel in distress".
