Angeal went silent when she heard her grandfather's answer. Now she understood why the two of them worked for the soul eater since birth.
It was because he saved her.
The human girl was told of what had happened when she was born into this world. Her mother died giving birth to her and she was also born weak to begin with.
Gladios told her that he stumbled upon their master and asked for help. Little did the girl know that their souls were actually sold in order for her to be saved.
The old man kept this a secret from her, knowing that she will feel bad once she knew that his soul is to be eaten by their master.
And probably hers, too.
Angeal then again fumbled on her phone then typed, satisfied with the answer. This gave relief to the old man, knowing that she won't probe him for more answers about the rescue.
"What happened earlier," she asked and the old man furrowed his brows.
"I don't know... when he stayed here two years before he left, I never saw him like that," he answered and he looked at the immortals in front of them. "Please enlighten us. What happened a while ago? What could we do for this situation?"
When the old man asked this, Arvid also looked at Ivar, his father, Martha and Gwen, curious of what had happened inside the mansion.
"I was not there... but I know it happened again. Those eyes are what you have to look out for. Especially for you, Angeal and old man Gladios," Gwen warned then Arvid put down his game console on the table then spoke.
"What's with his eyes turning red and why would Angeal and Gladios be careful?"
Edwin looked at him then answered his question.
"Once his eyes turn red, he could get uncontrollable. He would crave for the souls of any being near him and would attack people who gets in his way."
"That's why he's called a soul eater for a reason," Gwen added then she folded her arms in front of her chest. "No other type of food could satisfy him other than souls."
Martha furrowed her brows.
"But what got me thinking was why," she wondered then she looked at Ivar. "You've been out of this house for 18 years! The both of you should have done something to satisfy his hunger," she added then Ivar sighed as he shook his head, disappointed.
"He can't live drinking human blood forever. He has to eat souls."
"But that would mean—"
Ivar gave Edwin a look of warning, indicating for him not to speak any further.
Speaking in detail about their master's curse is taboo to them. Ivar found it inappropriate for the mortals to know since it will just create fear.
"Anyway, what did you all do earlier," Gwen asked, directing the topic to something else in order to distract the others from probing Edwin to ask what he was about to say.
"Martha got the last three humans that was hidden in the mansion."
When they heard this, Arvid and Angeal's eyes widened in shock.
"L-last three humans!? Hidden inside the mansion? W-where, when... how!?"
Arvid's head was about to explode upon knowing that there were other humans hiding inside the mansion. What made it more strange was that they have been in every room of the mansion but there were no traces of those three humans!
"The three humans were the last thieves I've fought. They were trying to steal from the mansion before Gladios and Angeal came," Edwin answered and Angeal typed quickly on her app.
"Those humans were kept somewhere in the mansion for 20 years before we came here?"
Ivar nodded, answering the girl's question.
"That's right. Since they kept snooping inside the mansion, even though we gave them warning for like three times, on the fourth time, our master decided to lock them up in a secret room that can only appear with the use of magic," he answered and added and Arvid calmed down.
"Oh... so it was like their punishment," he commented and Gwen nodded.
"That's right. Since then, there were news of these people missing without even a clue left behind. Those who knew them know where they went... so they never dared come back here again," she added and Angeal bit her lip then typed in her app again.
"So those three humans... they were..."
'He ate their souls... didn't he.'
Angeal didn't know how to type those words but everyone understood. Ivar nodded, answering her question, then he gave Angeal a sweet smile.
"He may be cold on the outside... but do know that he did his best to control himself not to hurt you and the others."
Arvid scoffed, finding the reason unbelievable.
"Yeah, right... she was sent flying," he mumbled to himself and Edwin smacked the back of his head.
"Oh, you wouldn't know. Once our master's hungry, he could eat the soul of anyone near him! What he did to Angeal was the best, rather than him eating her life!"
When the old man heard this, his hand turned into tight fists.
Now he wondered what if this were to happen again in their presence. How could they prevent this from happening? If it happens again, how could he possibly protect his beloved granddaughter?
But Martha's question was right indeed. They have been out of the mansion for 18 years, but why did this happen the moment they came home?
Does it mean that it had something to do with Angeal's presence?
Ivar sighed, showing his relief and at the same time fatigue.
"The important thing is, no one got hurt. He's inside his room resting and tomorrow, we go back to our usual work," he said then everyone nodded.
They all stood up and went back inside the mansion. The moment they came back, Gladios, Angeal, Arvid, and Gwen's eyes widened to have seen the destroyed mansion floor.
So this was the aftermath of the incident that had transpired a few moments ago!
How disastrous!
Edwin laughed nervously as he scratched the back of his head.
"Ivar, is master going to punish me for slamming him this hard on the floor?"
Ivar chuckled. "Let's hope he won't."
The moment his son heard their exchange of conversation, Arvid looked at his father with amusement.
"You did this... to our MASTER!?"
Edwin sighed. "I would be proud but looking at this... only meant more work for us," he complained then Arvid looked at his father as if he saw a new side of him that he didn't know.
They were all talking about how to fix the mansion floor but Angeal was lost in her own thoughts.
If their master and his personal servant, Ivar, were indeed out for 18 years... why did all of this happen, the moment they came home?
