“Stay still.”
Lucian froze and couldn’t hold back a small whimper when the man pressed the cold barrel of the gun against his temple.
“Uh-uh,” said the man when Payton pushed forward. “None of that.”
“We did what you told us.”
“I haven’t told you to do anything.”
The man’s breath was warm against his neck. Lucian shivered.
“What do you want?” Payton asked.
“The article. The files. Anything you’ve got on Senator Winchester. Delete them all.”
Lucian felt cold all over and he saw the blood leave Payton’s face. The Winchester case, the one they’d been working on. They thought everything was all right. Nothing had happened during their investigation. They garnered no special attention from anyone, especially Winchester’s people. They should’ve realized nothing would be as smooth as it seemed.
Lucian could see the wheels turning inside his boyfriend’s head.
