Harry's Resistance to Taking Charge

Harry sat in the Gryffindor common room with Ginny as they worked on their homework together, most of the other Gryffindors were currently asleep.

"Alright well I am done." Ginny said as she packed her stuff away. "What about you?" She asked Harry.

"I have only got a few minutes left," Harry said as he continued writing. "I would recommend going to sleep if you are still planning to practise flying tomorrow."

"Probably best," Ginny yawned. "do you know that Angelia and the rest said that they would help train me and the other chasers?"

"She did mention it," Harry nodded. "by the way how are you at seeker?"

"I think I am pretty decent, I mean I am not like you or Charlie but I am alright at it, why?"

"There is no reserve seeker so if you think you are fairly decent at it then maybe we can talk to Angelina about making you or one of the other chasers a reserve."

"Hmm, I'll think about it." Ginny said as she stood up. "Good night Harry." She said as she walked off and up to the fourth year girl room.

"See ya Gin." Harry called out as he continued working, several minutes later he had finished and leaned back and relaxed in his seat.

"Harry." A voice called, breaking him out of his enjoyable relaxation. He looked up to see Ron and Hermione standing in front of him.

"Can I help you?" Harry raised an eyebrow.

"Yes," Hermione nodded. "we..." She was cut off as Ron snorted, she glared at him only for him to glare back. "fine, I wanted to talk to you about something."

"Oh and what would that be?" Harry asked, wondering why she was talking to him now. She had been ignoring him so far and he was more than fine to continue with doing so.

"It's about Umbridge." Hermione said. "We are not learning how to defend ourselves, we are not learning how to pass our owls. She is taking over the entire school."

"Not the entire school, I am positive that Filch is going strong." Harry joked.

"Harry this is not the time for jokes."

"Especially not ones that bad." Ron added.

"Look, what exactly do you want me to do about Umbridge?" Harry asked as he rolled his eyes.

"No matter what you might say Harry you know that Voldemort is back, you saw him in your first and second year." Hermione argued. "I don't know why you aren't telling anyone."

"Because if Dumbledore wanted people to be told then he would have told them long before now." Harry replied. "Now what does this have to do with the pink toad?"

"Harry, we need to learn how to defend ourselves." Hermione said.

"Well go on then." Harry shrugged.

"We need someone to teach us."

"Well go on then." Harry repeated. "Professor Flitwick and McGonagall are the best in charms and transfigurations plus Professor Flitwick used to be a former duelling champion, go and ask them."

"We can't." Ron said. "If Umbridge found out that we were asking other teachers then she would put a stop to it."

"I guess it is pretty much hopeless for you then." Harry said in a sympathetic voice while he mentally groaned as he realised where this was going.

"Harry, I was hoping that you would teach us and some of the other students." Hermione said.

"And why in the name of Merlin's left testicle do you want me of all people to teach?" Harry sighed. Hermione frowned at the image he put in her head but pushed on.

"Harry you are the best in defence, you have fought Voldemort and basilisks and dementors, you can do a patronus charm! That's 'newt' level magic! Plus you won the tri-wizard tournament and you fought that dark wizard Apophis, Ron told me about watching the memory of it." Hermione said, she was rather upset that she didn't get to watch the memory but decided that now was not the best time to mention it. "You have the experience, skill and knowledge Harry. I think you could do a lot of good helping the students."

"Yes but you seem to have forgotten one crucial thing Miss Granger, desire, and simply put I have no desire to start teaching." Harry replied.

"But you could help so many people!" Hermione protested.

"Indeed I could." Harry nodded. "But then again I have been doing that all my life. I mean help the Dursley's and get abused, save the school in first year and get the Dursley's in return plus hatred the next year, save the school in second year and in return I get people to realise that I am not a mass murdering heir of Slytherin, it seems to me that whenever I help people it is me who suffers for it. Yes that might sound childish or whiny or whatever but quite frankly I am far out of shits to give about people that turn on me in a moments notice. Besides let's say that I do teach people, that will just bring Umbridge's ire on me. Why would I do that?"

"But...you...you really wouldn't help?!" Hermione said as she and Ron looked at him with disbelief.

"I have very few people that I care about in this school, I have no problem helping them but I am not about to start a 'club' or...whatever the hell you are suggesting and start teaching everyone."

"I can't believe it!" Hermione said as she glared at him. "First you cost me my arm and now you are refusing to help and..."

"Oh honey," Harry shook his head and tutted his teeth while also wondering if he sounded cool or funny when he said 'oh honey'. "I did not cost you your arm. You know damn well why you lost the ability to use that arm and you know damn well that it was because you did not listen to me. Which brings me to another reason for not helping, people like you two."

"What is that supposed to mean?!" Ron demanded as he joined Hermione in glaring at him.

"Oh I am sorry, is it not obvious?" Harry asked while raising an eyebrow, he turned to Hermione. "First of all I don't see much point in going to this thing when you and the people I teach are unable to listen to simple instructions such as 'don't mess with what isn't yours' or 'you can not read this'." Harry turned to Ron. "As for you, when I became an animagus Kingsley had went through the effort of discreetly registering me only for you to cock it up and let the whole school know."

"Like you cared," Ron scoffed. "you've been showing off about the fact that you can turn into a tiger for ages."
