The Painted

Ever since I remember I have always been intrigued by antiquated places. The kind of places that are abandoned with no trace of the human touch yet are crowded by the shadows of the past. The ancientness, the haunting yet captivating stillness that is shrouded in mystery has always called to me. The distant voice that sounds deceptively familiar echoes in the hallways travelling room to room with every intention of being heard and so I followed the echo taking me home. To a place that I have spent decades living in and yet don’t know how to find. It belongs to the deepest and darkest corner of my mind. To a place that is secluded from everyone like a hidden treasure in the heart of a majestic mountain or a lost shrine of an ancient and forgotten God, a place that I cannot enter yet know of its existence or at least I thought I could not until that morning…

Rest In Pieces

I finally decided to get off my ass and get some work done as I stood up and placed my purse and keys on the counter as well as the donuts.

I stretched my tried arms and legs while heading for the bedroom yet deciding to wash my hair first made a U tern for the bathroom instead.

"For some reason inside feels colder than outside" I noted to myself as I noticed my breath turning into vapor when I exhaled.

Entering the bathroom, the first thing I noticed was the huge cockroach on the wall in the shower.

'It looks like it is the flying type too, so annoying' sighing I picked up a slipper and inched closer to the hideous and disgusting creature that wasn't moving at all.

It seemed like it was having a staring competition with me by the way it was looking right into my soul.

I decided to just go for it as I smashed it with the slipper.

"Rest in peace" I mumbled and shook my head "or in pieces I guess".

Dropping the slipper, I opened the tap and took off my hat while I bent in front of the sink and wet my hair.

Opening the shampoo bottle, I poured some water into the already dilated mixture.

My 'shampoo' which was 90% water anyways resembled soapy water at this point as I poured it on top of my head.

I upsent mindedly washed my hair when I noticed the leakage from the sink forming a puddle of water under my foot.

Shrugging I decided to ignore it and instead focused my thoughts on today's events.

I mostly thought of my new home and how this was the best thing that had happened to me in a very long time,

since I graduated from college to be precise.

I came one step closer to fulfilling my biggest dream.

Although I admit my hard work wasn't very fruitful so far, yet I still had faith that one day I would be recognized for my talents and capabilities as a writer.

Closing the tap, I stood in front of the mirror and made a closer inspection of my appearance as water dripped down my hair onto my shirt making a chill run down my spine in the process.

The under-eye circles were getting worse and honestly, I could see myself slowly resembling a panda, yeah it was that bad.

'It's not like I can do anything about them anyways' I thought as I grabbed a small towel and made my way to the bedroom.

The constant lack of sleep wasn't something I was unfamiliar with.

I was even used to it at this point, especially at times like this when I was writing and working on my book.

Rubbing my hair aggressively with the towel I stood in the middle of the very cramped room after I pulled the suitcase from under the bed.

Looking at all the mess on the flour was very disturbing but I was having a difficult time deciding where to start.

"Should I start cleaning up first or packing?" I thought out loud rubbing my chin.

"Clean-up it is then" I finally decided "let's get rid of all this so I can have a little peace of mind".

Bending down I hurriedly began collecting rubbish and carelessly tossing them in the plastic bags I found lying around before I moved onto sweeping the floor.

After about 20 minutes I was finally done and looking around me I made a satisfied nod while I moved to push the bed to the side in order to open the wardrobe.

I quickly dumped my clothes into it from the closet and as it was still very empty, I decided to also pack the bed sheets and my pillow.

I didn't have many clothes to pack anyways, two sets of shirts, pants, and my pajamas.

I know, my living condition was very pathetic but that was all I could afford even after working 3 jobs.

The cost of living and the burden of loans was still too much for me to handle even after my gas and power cut.

Feeling tingling on my foot I looked down and shrieked when I noticed another cockroach.

The second one I had seen so far today.

Usually, I would have to kill five or six per day, so it had become a habit of mine to count them throughout the day as I killed them,

tricking my brain into thinking they were getting less when I knew they weren't.

'The sooner I leave this place the better. I'm so sick of everything here' I thought before I heard loud knocking on the door.

Abandoning my last mission, I dropped the slipper and quickly made my way to the door.

Checking through the peephole I swore under my breath "Shit, it's Billy.

What the hell does he want from me now?".

I contemplated to whether open the door for a few seconds until I finally decided against it and stood motionless while I waited.
