The Masked Oath

When Casimir's mother was killed before he could even count, his life took a turn for the worst. His early maturity was not a choice and neither was honing his sharp mind especially when being an orphan in an unforgiving world at such an age, was a death sentence. But against whatever odds pitted against him Casimir made it to the age of awakening mostly intact, that is if you chose to ignore his mental capabilities. Despite the early misfortune, his already dark fate would take another defining turn when he would awaken with a dreadful and terrible origin.

The carriage chugged on as they made their way through the not-so-busy streets of the wealthier district. Casimir looked out of the window at the streets, viewing the occasional man or woman going in and out of shops or strolling about with other people. He always wondered what life in the wealthier district of Cestane's capital was like. Back in Vinth things were slow and the rich usually stayed in their residential areas and seldom came to commercial districts. The majority of the time if they wanted anything they would send anyone working under them to take care of it, so Casimir would rarely see any of society's elite. That was not the case here in the capital, but maybe that was because it was the capital and it was that big. Another thing Casimir wondered about was the infrastructure of the awakened society, after hearing about the constant stream of awakeners they received regularly, he wondered how they had enough personnel to make it all work.

'I find out someday.'

The carriage, which he had found out was called a 'bus' after overhearing a conversation from a pair of people conversing in the row ahead of his, kept chugging at a steady pace. The seats were not comfortable as far as Casimir was concerned but he had experienced worse. He looked around and found the carriage much more packed and louder now.

'How can they be so chatty, do these people know each other perhaps?'

As he wondered how people could be so chatty, the carriage began to slow and he looked out the window and he suddenly found them nearing large walls. They had left the district, and much to his surprise he didn't know when. The carriage ground to a halt and Lieutenant Banks got up, exited and returned shortly. The large gates opened and the carriage began moving again and they entered. To his left Casimir found dense vegetation as they made their way towards the main building which, impressively enough, was visible from where they were. Eventually, they made them out of the little 'forest' and they could finally see the large buildings that were at the centre of the large military encampment. Around these buildings were large fields filled with people in the blue and black Cestane military uniform. People were practising with weapons of various kinds while others stood at attention presumably taking instructions from commanding officers, there were even some doing physical training of various kinds.

"Right listen up, as we speak the fifth squadron is undergoing an induction if you aren't aware, this squadron is assigned by your awakening month. So, you will also be inducted soon and begin as soon as possible. For now, you shall receive your identification cards and go rest, chat whatever but you will stay in your building of residence until supper, today will be your last day of rest please enjoy it because you won't have rest for another eternity. Your cards and watches shall have a navigation function, when you are alerted by the watches of course for supper it will show you how to get to your dining area. Once again welcome to the military please enjoy your stay."

Lieutenant Banks then ushered the group out of the carriage and in a single file they made their way towards what looked like the main entrance. Casimir took it all in, he didn't know life could be this colourful. The domineering architecture seemed to be a cultural deposition. The structures of Cestane were almost gothic but not gothic enough to be considered gothic, but they were too modern looking to be considered a Victorian. It was a charming blend over time, but it would put off a lot of people at first glance. They entered the large building and the inside was just as breathtaking. Marble floors and several lounging areas, which Casimir wondered if they were appropriate for a military headquarters.

"Your building of residence will be the fifth wing of the common dormitory one. ladies on the third and fourth floor gentlemen on the first and second. proceed to the desk over there one by one and obtain your I.D cards and make your way towards that building over there, a summary of your schedules shall be sent to your communication devices that are in your respective rooms. You may leave."

After lieutenant banks dismissed the group, they made their way to the collection point. One after another they collected their cards and made their way towards the common dormitory one building. The reception was busy from what Casimir observed. They weren't the only ones in here, but other men and women were doing whatever they had come here to do. The most standout ones seemed to be joyful and cordial with bags in their hands, Casimir assumed they were graduates. He eventually collected his card and now he was on his way to his room. He knew what he had to do now.

'I must make the most of the training then. Achieve a scholarship and possibly perform well enough to become a government contractor. If I have enough funds in the future I'll start a security firm, that can at least make me stable enough to carry out the rest of my plans.'

After another five mental sighs, Casimir concluded his mental conversation. His immediate way forward was pretty simple at the moment.

'And here I thought things would be smooth sailing from here on out.'
