The doctor leaned forward, her expression softening. "We've arranged for a transitional program to help you adjust. You'll have a place to stay, and there will be people to support you as you reintegrate into society."
"I won't go back to prison?" Brianna asked again.
The doctor pulled a document in her drawer and showed it to her. "You've already finished your sentence, Ms. Cordova. You received a maximum punishment of twelve years to life but someone had requested a sentence modification in your case, and the trial court had reduced it to six years after your mental condition proved diminished capacity."
Brianna nodded slowly, void of any happiness or excitement after being freed. The reality of her situation began to take shape in her mind. She was leaving. After six long years, she was finally going to be free.
