Chapter 6 The job offer

“Who?” Willa squinted at her incredulously.

“Him…”

She looked in the direction Olivia was pointing and saw a strong, towering bouncer in front of her.

A bouncer?

Willa frown even harder as she observed the man up and down. There was no doubt that the man was handsome. But she still couldn’t figure out why Olivia took interest in this modest man.

“A doorman! What is the matter with him?”

Olivia walked up to the man without answering Willa.

“Olivia, wait…” Willa went after her, but she was a bit late.

Olivia stretched her hand to the man, “Hey, do you remember me? I am Olivia.”

Vincent gave her a quick look before turning his eyes to her hand. He kept a grave expression on his face as he turned his gaze toward the people entering the pub.

Olivia’s expression changed slightly. It was the first time she had failed to draw the attention of a man. This man was not only handsome and strong, but he had attitudes as well. Olivia found it challenging. This made her even more desperate to win him over.

She curled her fingers and retracted her hand.

"Did you forget about me, or are you feigning it?" She gave him a seductive look.

Finally, Vincent locked his eyes to hers. "Ma'am, you better get in, and let me do my job.”

Olivia skipped several beats. Those limpid black eyes were so captivating. She wanted to dive into them. And his cold sonorous profound voice erupted goosebumps throughout her body.

She was not yet satisfied staring into his eyes, but he withdrew his gaze. Olivia was a little disappointed.

But she still smiled as she said, “Well, I am not here to disturb you. I wanted to thank you for saving me and dad that day. Um… can I have your number?”

She blinked at him cutely.

Vincent remained silent, his gaze fixed on the people in front of him.

Olivia was sort of embarrassed. It was her first time asking a guy for his phone number so brazenly. This man, on the other hand, was so arrogant that he didn't even bother to look at her.

‘Rude, huh… If I don’t make you run after me, my name is not Olivia,’ she muttered in her mind, but ended up saying, “At least, tell me your name.”

“Vincent McNeil. Would you please go now?”

“Thank you, Vincent. See you around.”

Olivia smiled triumphantly as she turned around and walked in. She would insist on her father bringing this man home.

Willa, on the other end, was taken aback. She asked in a trance as soon as they entered the bar, “That doorman… you mean he was the hero who saved you and uncle from that attack!”

“Yes, yes…” Olivia grabbed her arms on either side and exclaimed excitedly, “It’s him… my hero… Oh my…”

She clasped her hands over her chest, her eyes glittered with joy. “He is so… so good-looking.”

"Olivia, come down to earth." Willa tapped her shoulder. “He doesn’t seem to be interested in you. Can’t you see how cold he is?”

Olivia clicked her tongue and shrugged, “It doesn’t matter. How long can he be insensitive to my charm?” She waggled her brows up and down, a cheeky grin on her face. "Sooner or later, he will yield to me."

It was only then that Willa grinned. "Let's celebrate this moment with one peg or two," she said as she hooked her arm to hers and dragged her to the bar counter.

Outside the bar…

When Olivia entered the pub, a young man in a grey suit, accompanied by two men in black suits, approached Vincent.

“Good evening, Mr. McNeil. It's nice to see you again. I am Joseph.” Joseph stretched his hand towards him.

Vincent gave him a squint. This was the same man who urged him to accompany him to the hospital on that rainy day in the alley.

What a night it was?

First, he was approached by the young lady he had rescued just a few days ago, and now this man. Who knew what else would happen next?

Vincent gave him a half-hearted smile and shook his hand.

“My boss, Mr. Oscar Griffin would like to have a few words with you. Please, come with me.”

Joseph motioned for him to proceed.

“Sorry, I am on duty now,” Vincent denied it right away. “I can’t go.”

“It won’t take much time… only five minutes or ten. I am sure your pal will be able to handle it for a while." His attention was drawn to the bouncer on the other side of the entrance.

The other bouncer signaled Vincent to leave. It was only then that Vincent agreed to go with Joseph.

They crossed the road and entered a limousine parked alongside it. Vincent found the elderly gentleman there. Unlike that day, he looked vibrant.

"Mr. McNeil, please come in," Oscar said with a friendly smile. “Have a seat."

He tapped the spot beside him.

With a curt nod, Vincent sat down.

"I am grateful to you... especially for saving my daughter, Olivia."

Vincent only smiled slightly with his eyes on his fingers.

"I will be in debt to you for the rest of my life. I don’t know how to repay you.”

“I don’t need anything. Your gratitude is sufficient.”

“Hahaha…” Oscar Griffin couldn’t help but laugh at his honesty.

Everyone came to him intending to obtain something from him. Vincent was the first person he encountered who didn't want anything.

“Alright, alright. But I want something from you. I hope you won't turn this old man down.”

"What can I do for you?" Vincent inquired, lifting his head and looking at him inquisitively.

Oscar let out a sigh as he looked ahead. “Sometimes being wealthy can be a problem. It's the same with me. There are some known and unknown enemies who want to snatch everything from me… even my loved ones' lives."

“I don't care if somebody kills me, but I do care about my two daughters and grandson,” he stated, looking back at him.

After a moment of pause, he added, “I want you to be the protector of my children.”

“What…”

"Please..." Oscar grabbed his hand before Vincent had a chance to say further. “I request you. You are free to ask for whatever in exchange. In addition, I will provide you with a wage and accommodation. I am willing to cover all of your expenses."

Vincent was caught off guard. He didn’t like to get close to anybody. But he could not deny it, looking at his imploring gaze.

At last, he agreed with a firm nod, “Okay.”
